As of 2pm today we are now on hurricane watch again, this time for Gustav which is forecast to be a hurricane off our south coast by 8am tomorrow. Look out Florida again, and stay safe guys!

Luckily we are on the north coast and we have the highest mountains in the caribbean at our backs, and they USUALLY divert the worst weather either along the south coast, or up across the Bahamas. (Hope this is not a case of famous last words!! lol! )
The yard is protected by tall palm hedges but all the leaves above that are always shredded. It is always windy here normally - we are a world class kite-surfing destination because of the wind situation. This is how they always look, and these are my tall orinoco. The sky has become very dark and the wind is gusting strongly atm, which is not good news as the storm is supposed to pass 176 miles away, but even if it does come closer - I have plenty of pups to grow on. That is an old picture as that trunk has fruited and been cut down - but it must have been 16ft to the bud, and it is even nicer close to - lovely shades of glossy light green with no pink at all.

Yes - I was watching the weather channel and it said Tropical Depression, and then 2 hours later, Tropical Storm Gustav! They expect it to "become" Hurricane Gustav by tonight or tomorrow, so I hope this one doesn't pack a punch for Florida and the Carribean Islands/Cuba etc etc...

Forgot to mention, Good luck!
Jarred, are you going to dig up your bananas and move them to your new pad? I know that was off topic but I have been waiting for someone to ask.

Do you mean now before the storm? or just in good time? I think that is why he bought those hi-tech digging machines!

Oh, I meant before he moves! Not now...Lord...can you imagine trying to move all the bananas Jarred has, cutting psuedostems, washing corms and roots, and keeping them all labeled?!?!

We are now sandwiched between Hurricane Gustav to the west and TS Hanna to the northeast, and there is another big bad boy coming off the African coast. So far we have ducked and dived and it is a bit like being in a bowling alley. But at least it is not boring!! Before the season is up, I hope not to be making repairs like Bananimal. Just finished eating/passing out the last orinoco fruit we cut down before Gustav, with Fay that meant 2 bunches in 2 weeks and 90lbs of fruit. They were gorgeous - sweet and tangy but there is only so much you can eat in a short time, especially as they ripen so fast in the warmth. The gardeners and watchmen love us!!!

watching out for ya
been through a couple of near misses when I lived in Darwin. Strange things happened there - whenever there was a cyclone alert the "grog" shops 9lizuor stores/bottle shops) would sell out as everyone stocked up for a cyclone party. Truely - all of the younger people would drink until the storm passed

It looks like the hurricane will hit the central Gulf Coast. It's amazing how quickly this storm has strengthened in the last couple days.
