Default Hurricane party for Ike

With Ike passing 106 miles to the north, we went to a great hurricane party on the beach. With all the overcast it was nice and cool sitting outside by the pool for a bbq, then on to the beach to light the bonfire, and see the sunset with thunder and lightning to the north. When the lightning started to get bad, we all headed home and torrential rain started before we got to Cabarete, but no wind!! So rain on and off, power on and off, internet on and off - situation normal, but it was fun!! And we met some nice new people, some we had met before like the Canadian consul and his wife (my gym buddy), and some old friends.

But - shock - horror - they had NO BANANAS on their property!!! What sort of people are they? I'll have you know that it is tough out here in a 3rd world country to keep the standards up!!

Party Re: Hurricane party for Ike

GREAT PICS Island Cassie!!!! Glad you made the best of it. We had the remnants of Hanna up here yesterday and all it did was provide some much needed water after a fairly dry summer.........I'm going to have a party for the next one...........What else can you do?

Hey Bob - my sentiments exactly!! We have been without power for 12 hours and the wind is much stronger than yesterday. We'll probably go down to the beach later to look at the surf. But it is nice to be cool in the upper 70's. Hope you don't get too much rain and wind.

Pauly - I'm glad your bananas are starting to grow fast - even when the temps get up into the hundreds here, we are so humid and damp that they just keep going. It must be so difficult when it is hot and dry - great for people though!

Cassie, thanks for posting the pictures and describing your situation. I've been watching Ike's projected path and for awhile there it look like it was going straight into north DR. I'm much relieved!

Thanks Richard - those little jinks to the south were interesting. Funnily enough - today is much windier. So much so that I have just cut the still huge bud off the end of the tall red bunch. The male flowers have stayed on the stalk and are shaggy and decorative, but the bud weighed 5lbs and was flailing around quite violently, and I was worried that it might wrench the fruit in some way.

What beautiful pictures! Looks like paradise.
I got excited about Hanna and it was not much more than a tropical storm. I went by the bay right near my house just to see the choppy water. Guess I should consider us lucky. I did put up wind barrier for my basjoo and it came out unharmed. My Mom lives in Fl and was hit pretty hard by hurricane Charlie a few years ago.

Yes Raggedy - the USA does have it's fair share of weather problems - glad to hear you were OK. Hope your Mom is ok this year as Florida is in the hot seat again. Glad you liked the pics - there was massive lightning too but our fingers were always too slow to catch it!

Glad to hear you're OK too. I guess you could say I'm a storm nut. Lightning does scare me though. I know Ike is heading to FL now. My Mom is alone and we can't convince her to move north. She thinks I'm nuts to get so excited over hurricanes. I think if we ever get a big one here I will throw a hurricane party. We did have one a couple years ago, so off to the bay we went to watch. It was a pretty strong one. My crazy husband got out to watch, but I stayed in the suv.
I googled hurricanes that hit NJ and there were a few devasting ones. Category three. Hurricane Hazel in the 50's & Diana in the 80's. Diana was a really bad one, I remember it well. Others were not so memorable.

Cassie,

Glad to hear that you were spared. I can only hope that we will be as lucky. Looking at the center line of the projected path of Ike is putting it pretty close to the Houston area. I know they say not to focus too much on the center line but one can't help but worry. Everyone says Houston is way overdue for a big one and this one is beginning to worry me a bit. We've been lucky the past several years, with a few close calls. Let's hope this one goes somewhere else. I hate to say that because that just means misery for someone else, but we don't want it either.

Hi Cassie,
I wish you and all the people of Houston the best. I have been following the news on this one. Both my niece's family and my sister have homes in Houston. My sister just bought hers. Her and her husband are living in Thailand due to his work. They won't be in thier new house until April.

Hey Cassie, In Jersey we look for any excuse to party. Think I'll have a
good Luck toast to all in harms way.
