Jeeze I'm so glad this thing will miss us here in South Florida. we will get wind and rain but that's not to tuff to deal with.

Not missing us here! In fact, I have to be in the Hamptons (on Long Island) next week and I'm not sure what will be left since it will be a Category 2 hurricane with winds of 105 mph when the center lands somewhere on Long Island (or just misses Long Island to the east).

Where I live it looks like Tropical Storm conditions are definitely possible. Weather.com says winds will get to 35mph on Sunday and that might be a little conservative (and you still have to count gusts that will be stronger). I already have some plans to bring a few fragile plants in, but all the bananas in the ground will have to fend for themselves (when a tropical storm hit nearby last october, my plants did get some damage so it will be interesting to see how a Category 2 hurricane compares!).

I think an earthquake and a hurricane in 1 weeks is more than enough!

Wishing you luck up there. Here in Florida many of us are thankful that it missed but feel for those who are in its path. Take care.

Shifted the track 130miles west since 2am. getting us very close to being right back in the cross hairs in wilmington. I expect it to shift even further west and come right up the cape fear river. banana growing season may be coming to an end tomorrow night.

at least the surf is good today :-)

Now 3 models have the eye of the storm within 15-20 miles of my house! I have never experienced an actual hurricanes (countless tropical storms though), and I really have no clue how my plants are going to do. Im worried about my banana plants since I think they are really going to get ripped apart when 50+ sustained winds come in (with gusts higher than 90 mph possible!!). The forecast isnt set in stone though, but as it stands now, NYC is in big trouble.
I hope everyone gets through this okay.

I hope all my nanners, and everything else, survives. Unfortunately, my house is so far from the road, that I have two more utility poles on my property,that I own., and I have several huge trees that could fall on the lines, or my house. Luckilly, I have the greatest insurance company there is. (USAA)
As far as the bananas go, they can be replaced, and I'm going to the FNGLA trade show in a few weeks, where I'll get a few hundred more TCs.

The last thing on your mind will be bananas, trust me. I have nice squalls already as i grill in the garage and the worst is still 9 hrs off here in wilmington nc. Get your fam prepared NOW!

Thanks for the warning! Right now my bananas and plants are a huge worry of mine, but when it comes down to it, my family is BY FAR the most important thing and as long as we get through it, I'm considered lucky! I know that there will be some rebuilding that has to be done after this, but Im hoping its nothing more than a fence or 2 and maybe some outdoor lights.

I was a little let down that we didnt even get any rain from it. I have been hoping we get hit with a tropical storm this year. Just because we need some good flooding, our water table is still very low.

Mike, you still have all of September and October to get a nice tropical storm in FL, so don't get your hopes up yet! I know FL has been a little dry so it would be nice to see a tropical storm cut through the state. Best senario would be a tropical storm cutting through the state and then that tropical storm strenghthening to a Cat 1 hurricane as it works its way to Texas and helps their major drought out a bit.

As for Irene, heres an update from NYC...
The center is still pretty far to our south (a bit over 300 miles), but we are feeling the effects. The windows are fogged up because of the very high humidity and the winds are slowly starting to pick up a bit. Some of the rain is getting heavy, but nothing impressive or unusual yet. Hurricanes may not be too common for NYC (more common for Long Island), but we do have a ton of Noreaster experience here and some of them have brought hurricane force gusts so I think we may not be dealing with something too foreign. The biggest concern is going to be the 10 inches of rain on top of the 15 inches of rain we already have this month, and the storm surge will also be a problem here.

Hoping everyone is doing well so far. Unfortunately the death tolls are rising in NC and VA so please stay indoors if you are in the path of Irene, it could save your life!

I didnt do too bad here in NYC! Much better than expected! I didnt lose power (many did), and all my bananas came out of the storm with just a few shreaded leaves! Many of my potted plants fell/ flew across the yard, but even those really werent too damaged.
Now I'm cleaning up the yard and bringing my plants back outside.


UPDATE...
Just as I was writing, my power did go out! I guess I spoke too soon. I still have half of my power because its one of the transformers next to my house causing the problem (sparking). This is the same problem I had during a noreaster 2 Marches ago.

Good luck to you, Alex. We made it through fine. Lots of leaves and small limbs to clean up from the tulip poplars (Around 90+ feet tall, and about 12 of them in my yard). The fish seem ok after I cleaned the pond and fed them. All of my bananas, palms, etc made it through fine. I didn't even lose power (crosses fingers as he tempts fate).
