Abnshrek...actually I'm thinking of using 'stalk'[?] for the stand...cut down a couple trees, and love the colors [inside and out]...

You realize that the banana plant is not actually a tree, and the "stalk" or pstem will rot pretty quickly... I'm not saying it can't be done, I'm just saying maybe your initial idea is not quite practical.
I have heard of the dried pseudo stem being used to make fiber, maybe you could make some sort of rattan type furniture? Good luck, keep us posted with pics! |

Quote:
Banana products are made from the fiber of the banana plant not whole banana parts. In the hands of experienced workers of banana products the work goes fairly quickly once the banana stems are crushed into fiber that is useful for such a project. On youtube you can find videos that depict the process of crushing the banana stems by machine with two counter rotating rollers There also a video depicting SE Asian women stripping banana plants with hand scrapers. I don't have the URL. There are a number of videos depicting how the fibers are woven, braided or bundled to accommodate whatever is being made. . Good luck. |

Banana plants are about 93% water. To make something from a whole stem you are going to have to dry the stem for a long time or know that the water is going to drain out of the stem onto your floor over time.
