Default Getting very cold here (for us!)

Today in Santo Domingo in the south of the island, the temps fell to 20c/68f - the coldest for 45 years and forcast to get colder too. Everyone has sweaters and wooly socks on except my neighbours who flew in from New Jersey last week. The strong winds broke a new leaf off my red banana so we are having tuna wrapped in banana leaf tonight. No sense in wasting it although I can't bring myself to cut one off just for cooking. I think North America must be exporting its weather!!!

Wow Cassie, I'm amazed that 68 is your lowest in that long! Even in the Caribbean I'd have figured it would dip into the 50's every now and then!

I found it interesting to see weather alerts for Miami this week, warning about exposure to the cold and hypothermia and all that. For us we take it for granted and don't think twice about it!

Makes me remember a diving trip several years back in Key Largo. It was January with morning temps dipping into the 40's. Everyone on the boat was bundled up, shivering and freezing. But of course the water temperature was unaffected, so jumping into 80 degree water was sheer bliss! Like a giant hot tub!

Hope you guys warm up soon!

~Joe

It is great diving in a warm sea when the air temperature is cool - feels wonderful. How do you do on rainfall where you are? In the year to 31st December 2007 we had 112.35 inches - over 9ft and that isn't anything special as we only had a few big storms.

Well at least it will warm up here as soon as this front passes. I cannot imagine how hard it is to get through a really snowy winter - looks pretty on Christmas cards but must get tiresome after a while. In Oct 2006 we took the train across Canada and the first snow had fallen. It was so pretty!

Stay warm

Hi mskitty

The floodwaters up here on the north coast had just about dried up, but we have had 2 days of fairly heavy rain and as the ground is super-saturated, the water is just lying on the top. We are on a slight rise but our Swiss neighbours had 4 inches of water in the house and the swimming pool was full of mud and leaves. But not all bad as all this water will make the nanas grow like mad once it warms up again. Still waiting for my pathetic ladyfinger to start to grow - it just has 1 tattered leaf and I don't think it will put on any more. I expect it to produce a pup and check it daily but it is still hanging on - just! It started to dwindle as soon as I planted it on 2nd October but I talk to it every day.
