Denial of service attack
 

Just a thought not an expert but......

The recent multi posts in the main discussion seem to be a sort of denial of service attack.

FIRST...Thanks Harvey....for being proactive and doing something to stem the flow of posts.



Somebody probably made somebody mad.

With deep web access and 500 bucks.....one can deny a website of positive traffic for a specific period of time......a brute force attack.

Average cost is 70.00 to 1000. per hour depending on vendor.......even more for high profile sites.....but this one was only to attack one thread......But ...multiple threads with the traffic that this attack produced would be somewhat catastrophic for the forum owners.

AKA..... A Banana attack. Yes that is the real term for an attack like this.

Could this be one?

Application-layer floods[edit]
Various DoS-causing exploits such as buffer overflow can cause server-running software to get confused and fill the disk space or consume all available memory or CPU time.

Other kinds of DoS rely primarily on brute force, flooding the target with an overwhelming flux of packets, oversaturating its connection bandwidth or depleting the target's system resources. Bandwidth-saturating floods rely on the attacker having higher bandwidth available than the victim; a common way of achieving this today is via distributed denial-of-service, employing a botnet. Another target of DDoS attacks may be to produce added costs for the application operator, when the latter uses resources based on Cloud Computing. In this case normally application used resources are tied to a needed Quality of Service level (e.g. responses should be less than 200 ms) and this rule is usually linked to automated software (e.g. Amazon CloudWatch[18]) to raise more virtual resources from the provider in order to meet the defined QoS levels for the increased requests.The main incentive behind such attacks may be to drive the application owner to raise the elasticity levels in order to handle the increased application traffic, in order to cause financial losses or force them to become less competitive. A "banana attack" is another particular type of DoS. It involves redirecting outgoing messages from the client back onto the client, preventing outside access, as well as flooding the client with the sent packets. A LAND attack is of this type.

An attacker with shell-level access to a victim's computer may slow it until it is unusable or crash it by using a fork bomb.

A kind of application-level DoS attack is XDoS (or XML DoS) which can be controlled by modern web application firewalls (WAFs).

Cincinnana, this is over my head and I have no idea what you are talking about. But thanks anyways.
All I know is that I once lost a newspaper photo contest I had entered for exactly the same reasons that happened to the forum here today.
My photo received votes all spread out over a 24 hour period. The winning photo received ALL of its votes in a 20 minute time frame. Even though I filed a complain, the cheater was rewarded the prize, a car. I was told that they had looked into it but there was nothing they could do. Ironically through Facebook I found out that the winner of the car worked for a major local computer company.

The posts were certainly automated. There are scripts available that are designed for automated spam postings to bulletin board systems. Strangely though the perpetrator chose to unleash seemingly unlimited posts at a rate of about 1 per second.

I've deleted some more, still hoping Jarred will come in and wipe them out easier.

I use Exede satellite Internet service which has generally worked out great but the latency issue makes stuff like this take even longer. Can someone lay some fiber optic cable to my place, please??? :)

Don't know anything about all this hi tech stuff, though I do know these kind of people suck.

There must be some kind of special karma God has in store for them.
