complaining about the weather!!!!
This has been very challenging here in Indiana this year.
First we had rain every day so that we couldn't plant tomatoes until June 10th. If we did get a rare day when it wasn't raining, we were slammed with customers so that we couldn't even think about planting. Then we had rain every other day so that the plants got to tall before we could get them tied up. Then we had rain every three days so that you couldn't till the garden and get the weeds out. Then the rain completely quit and we've had exactly .10 inch of rain since June 20th. Now it's been 90 degrees every day, and it's supposed to be 97 in a couple of days. No sign of rain in the forecast. I'm watering approx 3 hours a day, and that doesn't count the time that the drip irrigation is going on our 1/2 acre of veggies and the hosta and pumpkin areas that are on drip. I'm sorry to sound negative, but I think I'm ready for this season to be over.

Re: complaining about the weather!!!!
I can jump on this bandwagon.
I have had rain ONCE since October and that was less than 1/4 inch. We are burnt to a crisp. They are calling this the worst drought in our recorded history! I am ready for it to be over with too! Geez! Give us a break Lord! ~JaNan

Re: complaining about the weather!!!!
It is 4:25 and the temperature is now 103 F. Heat index around 115. I heard that the Pacific weather pattern (el nino) indicates that we can expect a hot dry summer 2012.
I can stay outside long enough to move the water hose, then I have to come back inside, drink a glass of iced tea and cool off. I don't think my complaining will change anything though. |

Re: complaining about the weather!!!!
I have a garden vegetables with raised bed thats doing ok; have long purple green beans(so productive), long green beans, tomatoes, pumpkins, green/purple okras(very productive in heat), sweet potatoes(loves heat), watermelons, celantros, garlic, onions, leeks, cassava-tapioca, strawberries, bittermelons, varieties of peppers, asparagus(very productive-just keep cutting them), indian cucumber-ivy gourd, 10 bananas(ground and pots), drumstick tree-best green veg(moringa oleifera & moringa stenep), papayas, santols, calamandin-calamansi, lemon meyer, water spinach, pamello, lemon grass, rice..
No rain for the past month( although it misted 2 days ago for only 30 minutes with blazing humid heat). It has been so hot with dry heat- average 104 degrees(highest 108) in dallas for like straigh 18 days now. What really helps from the blazing heat and annoying weeds is to have the plants/vegetables planted in a raised bed with good soil. I have mixture of miracle grow soils, bm7 soil that has composed barks and perlite for drainage. The bottom is clayey, so mixing the mixture soil really helps. The only time I buy vegetables in the store this summer is corn- that is if its considered a vegetable. Oh, and as for watering in hot summer days I water them in the morning, not during the day when its hot because of the quick evaporation. If time permits, maybe at night too. As for my tropical fruits and vegetables that grows in pots, I water them early morning too, but not at night for it may cause root rot. Learned that the hard way about my container papayas; also they dont like sitting on watered tray and they need good aeration or it will be the death of them. Hope this helped. Happy planting.

Re: complaining about the weather!!!!
I hear ya Sandy! This is the hottest in 16 yrs - when over 100 ppl around Milwaukee died from the heat. The humidity makes it worse --dewpoint is high. Lots of burnt grass around. I watered yesterday & 3 times I had to come inside to rest & drink water.... being soaked from sweat. It is over 100f w/ heat index to 110 - 115. Not fun!
Late on planting this year...I remember complaining about the cold & wet spring! I've been in Arizona @ 100* but at least it's dry there & wasn't too bad.

Re: complaining about the weather!!!!
Try living in western WA...we have had the coldest wettest spring and summer this year...very depressing! We have mostly overcast days since March this year. We are lacking sunshine and some warmer temps. Our weather man said we had 78 minutes of above 80 degrees this year. My bananas are growing but slowly. My bamboo likes this weather all of the bamboo plants I have and I have quite a few different ones are growing like crazy.

Re: complaining about the weather!!!!
I live inland in S Fla and we are getting extremes of heat too. All the naners leaves are "pursed up" from noon till 7 PM.
In order to spend more time outdoors I dress in a t-shirt and shorts and jump in the pool before starting yard chores. Put on crocks instead of sneakers to kick off easy. I start to dry up and get hot after an hour or so and I jump in the pool again. By staying wet you can get in 3 or 4 hours of productive work, even on the hottest days. And, of course, always wear a hat. And no beer till the work's done! Last edited by bananimal : 07-20-2011 at 11:54 PM. Reason: add beer |

Re: complaining about the weather!!!!
We tried that getting in the pool thing and then working. It works pretty well--except we seem to have a plague of horseflies in our part of the country this year and they are attracted to the water if you're wet. Now, mind you, no one around here has any animals at all except some horses about 1/2 mile away.
Anyway, I feel better, we're all in the same fix with weather. Old mother nature is a real pain in the butt sometimes!

Re: complaining about the weather!!!!
The only thing that attacks me when I'm just soaked and working outside is the dog. She comes to lick drops of water off my legs.
And when your hot and dry and just come in she runs up to lick drops of sweat. Then it's ------ "Arrrrgh -- get away from me with that cold nose!!!" I have to give her a fresh bowl of water. Labradors love their water. And horseflies? It could be worse. Like south Jersey green heads -- they bite hard. |
