Haha Kylie - sorry I can't help you with that problem! Luckily we don't have skunks here - small snakes are not a problem as you say, and the dogs ignore them.

Back about 40 years ago I caught a skunk in a trap. I was trying to catch a ground squirrel, but I guess the skunk had taken over the hole. I had taken a taxidermy class and decided that the skunk had pretty nice looking fur so I talked my younger brother into helping me skin it. I was being very careful, but still cut open the sack and got a straight dose of that stuff on my brother and me! LOL Okay, I wasn't laughing at the time, I suppose, but I can laugh about it now. You should have seen the look on my mom's face when I explained to her how this had come about. She might have been thinking that she wished she had all daughters!!! My one sister was a tom boy, but that might have been different if she had 3 sisters instead of 3 brothers. Anyway, mom had all kinds of suggestions from friends, including tomato juice, toothpaste, and only God knows what else. I can assure you that none of these helped in any significant way and mom would not even let us go to Mass two days later! I better tell my 10 year old boy this story before he comes up with the same stupid idea some day.
![]() The only thing I know of that would probably work would probably make your dog look pretty funny - bleach. I learned from a county fair manager that was the best way of getting the smell of pigs off of me after helping load some up. Good luck! |

You can try vinegar which is more acidic than the tomato juice and there are commercial preparations available at the vet. Bottom line is nomatter what every time the dog gets wet for the next couple of months you'll be reminded a bit of "eau du skunk". If you come up with something better please post it.

Some of the stuff you can get at the vets office works good. I've also heard that lemon juice works good too. Just don't get it in the eyes it stings.

Glad you enjoyed that, Sam. That was actually my second encounter with a skunk, but the first one was less "direct" (walked through weeds hunting down a skunk to shoot it since it seemed rabid.)
Wisdom does not always come with age in these matters, though. About 10 years ago a skunk was hanging around our yard on the farm. I decided to take care of it with my .357. It seemed like such a good idea I did not take the time to think about surrounding objects. I missed the skunk. But worse than that, the bullet ricocheted and did some minor body work to my wife's car. It's really bad when my wife has concrete evidence to demonstrate my poor judgment like that! I'm not really that dumb but I really amaze myself at some of the dumb things I've done. At least I don't take myself too seriously and can laugh at myself. ![]() Thanks, Mitchel for the secret recipe! Harvey |
