Christmas Card Lane

This time of year, our street in Rancho Penasquitos CA becomes "Christmas Card Lane". Nearly every house in the neighborhood displays life-size holiday cards and characters from stories, movies, comics, etc. -- a couple hundred houses in all. Across the street from me are a train set, and Spiderman giving his holiday wishes. There are horse-drawn carraiges, musicians, carolers, and enterprising teenagers selling hot drinks and cookies. Tour buses travel from neighboring counties bringing people from Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and Riverside. During the next week we will have 3,000 to 5,000 people per night strolling the streets.

I'm glad that's not my neighborhood!

3+ weeks out of the year I watch the general public go by, typically in the happiest of moods, enjoying all the decor this neighborhood puts out. At night time, about every 10 minutes you'll hear some child yell out in surprise "Mom, it's Dora!", or "it's Garfield, it's Garfield". Warms the soul more than any mug of hot chocolate ever could.

The public schools are out for 2 weeks, so we are getting additional daytime traffic as well. Here's a tribute to Bill Watterson on a property down the street:

I guess if you like it that's great. I'd much rather have my neighborhood quite as normal!

On New Year's day I took down the life-size Christmas Cards and unplugged the lights. But I managed to procrastinate taking down the strings of lights until today. Not too bad, my all-time record is the 1st week of April!
