The truth of the matter is, (even though I'm ashamed to admit it ) I haven't really read the manual from cover to cover...merely skimmed it.

I've never edited my pics in any way. I just snap them and then load them from my memory card to photobucket and then to banana org. I wouldn't know the first thing about post processing.

I think the reason for this banding business, could be just my ignorance about the proper settings to use, etc. I really need to take the time to read more thoroughly and I'm certain my pics will get better. Just been having too much fun to be bothered with studying.

Thanks for explaining things to me. So you think I should edit my photos? But then I think they'll be like fakes and not real. I suppose a little enhancement here and there couldn't hurt. I really don't know how to do this yet though and I can't answer your other questions either...yet.

Give me time but I will improve. I'm still an amateur just yet...don't forget.

: )
Aww ok. You must have the camera set on a lower quality. Even at a lower quality P-bucket is using their software to re size it and in the process your getting some banding. That would be my guess anyway.

About your feeling on editing/processing. All digital photos are processed by the camera if your shooting .jpg and not RAW. The white balance, saturation, contrast, sharpness etc are done by the camera in jpeg. Even real film had to be processed and there were a ton of ways to change the look of the final product.

There are many ways to post process digital, some for a more realistic look like what your eyes saw when you shot the photo, some more artistic. Just depends on what you want to do with it.

Hi there.
I'm actually a photographer so if you have any settings, editing questions please let me know.
If you're going to be taking a ton of pictures and want to be able to sort through them quickly, post easily online and auto-edit through your own specs you should get Lightroom. You can get an older version for not too much on Amazon or elsewhere.

View some of my pics on flickr. Flickr: Images by Tommy G's Photostream

But I would be happy to help you with identifying good lenses for different things and more.

Thanks!

I'll post a couple tips.
1. Learn to use the camera in Aperature priority first and then go towards shooting in manual.
2. Cloudy days are your friend, it creates even lighting for subjects and options (like your plants and flowers).
3. Make sure to use your over and under exposure buttons.
4. If you are shooting closeups of flowers and such try to get a macro/micro lens. I have had a 60mm and currently have a 105mm 2.8 lens and they are fantastic when shooting closeups.
5. Starting point for outdoors should be iso 200-400 and indoors 600-800.
6. Also, don't use your on-camera flash as it is flat and too close to the camera body (red eye). Purchase and learn to use an on-camera flash. It does wonders although a little intimidating at first.
7. Learn about bouncing flash, angling the flash, and diffusing, lowering and adding power.
8. If you can afford big memory cards always shoot in RAW. All Photoshops come with a built in Raw editor. They are very basic, but will give you tons more options on editing Camera style mistakes/edits. Like exposure, light tones, dark tones, chromatic aberration etc. So if you can't afford lightroom you can do a lot more editing shooting in Raw. Just rememeber the files are larger. Best thing is that the original files will never be touched when you do edit them. It actually creates a copy of it until you save it.

I'm not a pro, but I have done tons of research and learned a lot from experience.

So if anyone has a question please message me on here and I'd be happy to help.

I shoot Nikon and use two cameras and do weddings and potraits as well as nature/random stuff.

Hope I can help!

Lol I didn't realize how old the thread was, but congrats on your purchase. Although I use Nikon, Canon is a great product and I'm sure the more you learn about it, the more you'll be able to do with it and the more you'll want to do with it.
It can quickly become addictive to take pictures especially if you have important subjects.

Enjoy! and continue to post your pictures!

Hiya Re: Camera Talk!

Thanks for all the tips.

Right now I'm on vacation and don't have a lot of time to get too technical about my pics, but plan on learning much more over the colder months. I'm just having fun taking shots for now but will surely let you know if I need any help from you in the future, Tommyg.

Mitchel, I'd like to try post processing at some point and think it could be lots of fun.

Took this shot this morning with my powershot canon digital...

Happy Thanksgiving, Canada!!!

Thumbs up Re: Camera Talk!

Great video, Mitchel!

I really enjoy taking shots of others but I gotta get up more nerve. At this point I've been sneaking behind trees and poles and zooming in on unsuspecting people. The shots are never that great because I take them in a rush mostly. In this one I was terrified they'd turn around and see me aiming my camera right at them!

I really would like to take more pics of people but want to avoid any confrontations.

So I was thinking of trying some processing of my pictures and maybe play around a bit. Any recommendations of a certain program or site I should use to do this? Not familiar.

I'll send you a video you'll enjoy.

As for processing Adobe Photoshop is king, but the learning curve is huge! They also make Light Room which is very useful. Some of my friends are almost exclusively using LR now. There are several free processing softwares out there. GIMP is a knockoff of PS (sort of) and it works great.

I'm not sure what I enjoy more, photography or processing. They are both very creative.

My wife is fired up on street photography now so that might become my focus. pun intended

I did them in photobucket, as with these ones also...

Wow this is just too much fun! I see why you love it now Mitchel!

So great that you will participate in street photography...looking so forward to your pics. I'm fascinated with pictures of strangers and it's been a growing interest...plus now that you've shown me those cool videos, I'm a bit fired up myself. I've been doing some beach street photography these last couple days!

This guy looked like he was deep in thought this morning while enjoying his coffee...

He decided it wasn't worth fretting over, and he split...

There were better shots of this girl but I chickened out...

Aww, just walk up take a shot and tell em' you like their shirt or whatever. If they protest just delete the shot and move on. It's way creepier if they catch you talking shots behind their back.

I really gotta get up the nerve and I will. Waiting to see your close-up stranger shots...

Maybe I should start a thread and do a survey of what others would think if someone they didn't know came right up to them and snapped their photo! Personally I'd likely freak out and ask them who the hell they think they are!!!

Well my wife is all fired up on street photography so she ordered this from Netflix. He is arguably the most famous street photographer ever.

I forgot you can get a free trial of Photoshop Elements. It has pretty much everything you need to get your feet wet.

I can't access it, Mitchel. I've been trying for days. It keeps saying the download will take over 80 hours!

I even registered and got an account with them and they said my trial was all set but when I logged on it was more of the same. Not sure what's up but I'm disappointed and wanted to check it out.
