I caught what I believe to be boat-tailed grackle in a live catch trap right on the Panama canal. There were two females inside, and 1.7 billion on the fence behind it. I couldn't get close enough to release them until dark because the others were trying to protect the trapped ones. It was like watching "The Birds" in real life.
The trap was set, originally , to catch the Coatimundi which were scattering our trash....And THAT'S ANOTHER lil' devil pest!

please be kind to all animals, DO NOT PUT ANTIFREEZE out to poison them. it is a painful and cruel death. Try something else.

You don't keep squirrels out, short of shooting or trapping them. Just as you don't keep monkeys out; I refuse to shoot or trap them, and they have their own banana plants.

Patty,

sounds like you can open a restaurant here in the south. Want me to go down to the neighbor and get you some recipes??

I'm from a big city in Germany and hubby from England, needles to say we never encountered possums, raccoon and squirrels on our menus until we came to the south LOL Neighbor had a raccoon hung on the tree of the front yard dressing it a couple of weeks ago

We have (usually) chipmunks too
But we also have red-tailed hawks
So the squirrel & chipmunk population are kept in check
I was walking along my fence/pool one year, lined with sunflowers
I looked to my right - sunflower just even with my eyes
A chipmunk was stuffing his cheeks with seeds

I haven't seen a single bunny in over 5 years

To clarify- I wasn't asking for a bait for the traps, but a more lethal variety. I know they don't sell bunny busters but thought maybe a toxic bait for another rodent could be used instead with success. Patty, these littele Bugs just hop around my marigolds! You all would have laughed this morning to see my 89 year old mom chasing one swinging her quad cane at it.

Shopgirl, I am not into torture...I have not used antifreeze. There is no other way to keep squirrels out. I used to shoot them but my neighbor would call police on me - and it is more painful than drowning. I had a dog that caught & killed them but if I was a squirrel, I'd rather drown.
Years ago I thought they were cute till they ate holes in my eaves & damaged anything growing in my garden.
I have plants & trees growing for 4-5 yrs now & getting their first blossoms. I will NOT let a squirrel destroy them.
I will protect myself & my property with whatever it takes. If a burglar came in my house I wouldn't hesitate to shoot - if I had a gun, and that would be harder to do.
Speaking of....... just over 2 yrs ago I was burgled while I was home in bed sleeping. All he wanted was my purse (thank God)- which he got. It had EVERYTHING in it. All my keys, c cards etc. He was a crack head. What would he have done to me if I woke up & faced him? He was caught 3 weeks later & confessed. He got 5 years.
I say, do what you have to do to protect yourself & your property.

BTW, I dropped the idea of toxic bait. If the rabbit goes outside of the yard and another animal gets it (dog, cat, etc.) it would poison it also. So that's been discarded- too dangerous.

I parked in front today at 5:30 & saw a coon walking up my neighbors steps to yard. I never saw one during daylite before. 1/2 hr later I looked out back & he was drinking from my pond. Trap was set but no bait - DARN. He saw me & climbed over fence. I put bait in (pnut butter on piece of bread) & he was in it about 1 hr later.
That makes 2 this week - 18 total.
Something was digging soil in a pot recently. Don't know if it was him or a squirrel. Haven't seen a squirrel for awhile.
I think my pond is attracting the critters. Little do they know that they will get a swimming lesson in it.

Raccoon #20 this morning. The biggest this year so far. I looked out & the trap was gone! it got moved about 15 ft to the left. He could not move it himself from inside, so his family or buddies musta tried saving him & actually dragged it. I wish I had a video of it. This tells me there's more out there.
So heavy, I had a hard time tossing it in pond. It wasn't in all the way -he poked his nose out, so I pushed it in further & I felt his hand touch mine to grab it. That just scared the heck outa me. How he got his arm thru the flap, I don't know, but if he grabbed my hand or finger, he wouldn't have let go till he drowned. They are very strong. WHEW- that was scary! He weighed 23 lbs
Someone recently told me it's coons that love grapes. They took every one of mine 2 yrs ago - & I blamed it on squirells. I still have squirells digging into & knocking over my pots, so the war is still on.

Patty, you need to learn to skin and prepare the hides of these giant coons. You could accrue some serious cash.
