Re: Anyone ever have predator problems with livestock?

Different areas have different predators. M'gosh Lorax, I wouldn't go anywhere without a gun if I were you LOL. I live in a highly populated area in the heart of the city so besides my usual pests, I've seen deer & skunk but it's rare. There was a coyote spotted & ID'd last summer.
If you go a little further north where there is more forests, there are bears, wolves, fox, mink, deer, coyotes & more. People go out of way to protect not only chickens, but horses, cows & sheep!
In New York city the main 'pest' problem is rats & cockroaches... same in Chicago (from what I hear).
When I was in Mexico, a tour guide pointed to some small mountains & said you can't go there without a gun or you'll never come out alive. YIKES. So, I guess I shouldn't complain about my 3 main pests.

Yeah, thanks for the reality check, Beth! Yikes...guess we have no place to complain, huh! We did have a mountain lion around eastern Iowa in the past year...it shredded a tree at my Grandma's house from about 7 or 8 feet to the ground. Needless to say, we always were very cautious when we went to take her supper at night!

I deal with Puma, Jaguar, Ocelot, Little Spotted Cat, Harpy Eagle, and Swallowtail Kites, in addition to the regular giganto-rats, huanchaka (possum), foxes/wild bush dogs, and a couple different kinds of weasels, and if I decide to grow tilapia I will also have to look out for otters. It's illegal to kill any of these critters other than the huanchaka and the rats (endangered species) so I generally use blowdarts with dieffenbachia sap.

Suck it up......are possum really that troublesome?:ha:

Forgot to mention - scorpions in Greece, very bad problem, especially when you find more than 50 small animals in your hotel room. :D

Pauly, no apologies needed. You have a right to your opinions as we all do -- it's the American way!
Please beleive me that no one is "berating" you in any way!
Did you ever swat a fly? That's also a pest. Is that inhumane?
Pauly, deer here are killing people in many car accidents. A couple years now, they opened a xtra deer hunting season to get rid of a over-population of deer. Same thing as racoon & possum. Theree is no reason for preserving them.
I'm tired now & will post the rest later.

Thank you Patty...I was gonna say the same thing! No need to apologize, Paulo! No was meaning to attack your views...just voicing their own. It's all good! Just a friendly discussion, that's all! *hugs*

Amen, Pauly. That's why I use Dieffy darts - it irritates but doesn't kill, just gives the critters the idea that this is not where they belong.

Fast dog is a solution too. If it is clever enough and you don't feed it, it will learn how to hunt birds and small mammals. Just like my grandpa's dog. :ha:

Bryan, sounds funny but my calendar is like a diary LOL. Every time something's in the trap, I mark it on the calendar. I also mark the first & last days of frost, first blooms, when I turn AC on etc. I can go back 3 years on events LOL.
Jack, I never heard of "jackdaw' bird! We have some big crows here but didn't know they were daws by you. :)

hmm, you don't know me very well! lol

I even sent you and private message apologizing if me posting this subject was offensive to you! As I am much respectful of others and their personal viewpoints.

There isn't an angry bone in my body! And surely my post was not remotely typed in anger! Just didn't want there to be any misconceptions of my intentions and misconceptions of the law and issue when it comes to endangered animals!

Once again I am sorry if this subject offends you and in no way was I angry at any point while typing this rebuttal! :0519:

Gave up on trying to catch the coon in the act, may have someone that is going to let me borrow a trap and try to catch him that way...

Anyone have suggestions on what to use as bait. My friend said when he had a trap they would always end up getting the bait and not getting caught!

Sardines. They crumble and fall into and under the bait pan. It helps to put brush/boards , w/e at the bait end to prevent them from sticking their arm in and tripping the trigger.

Re: Anyone ever have predator problems with livestock?

I use p nut butter on a cracker or small peice of bread. They all love p nut butter. Put it in center & back far enough so they step on the part that closes the trap. I've had bait stolen too, but I think it was birds - something too light to set it off. To be sure, sometimes I put 2 pieces in. One on the flap (trigger) that they step on, & one further behind that, to make sure they step on that trigger. Let us know!!!
And, don't forget to re set the trap next night. The mate will come around looking. Once, I saw one in the trap during night, & 3 others circeling around trying to figure how to get him out. They even dragged the whole trap! I kept resetting the trap & got all 3 of them the next few nights.

Well the best way is to bait them (you in overwatch and shoot them with a pellet gun (if season is still open)) or traps work too :^) I used to bait them in kentucky and got rid of plenty from rippin' off my stuff :^)

I have a tech force t-99 .22 caliber spring piston air gun and it does the trick on small varmints like squirrels and other rodents. I have an ongoing squirrel problem as they go after the ripening bananas. What is even more annoying is they take a bite out of an avocado and ruin the fruit and let it drop to the ground to rot...I feel no mercy.

they do that with all kinds of things in a garden; bite the tomato plant just above the tomatos so they fall to the ground and can't ripen & rot. I say they are fare game 24/7/365 :^)

Re: Anyone ever have predator problems with livestock?

When I was a preteen and teenager our family raised chickens, rabbits, and cattle on our farm. We had problems with opossums, racoons, skunks, wild dogs, and an occasional bobcat. I was well practiced engaging targets at night. Some of the enlisted instructors in the Marine Corps wondered where an Officer could learn to shoot so well.

But we don't have those problems where we live now. Live traps work sometimes, and in an urban environment they work best. Waking up the neighbors in the middle of the night would probably upset them. :2239:
