All heck broke loose in SE TN!!!
Just received a call from wife at home while I am at work. She said power out and neighbor thinks a 'microburst' hit our neighborhood this evening. My backyard looks terrible according to my wife with part of my old privacy fence blown down, my 60 gallon queen palm blown over!!! Haven't ever heard of it being this bad at my place before. Being at work doesn't help. Talking about your sick feeling in the gut of your stomach!!! Looks like I have a lot of work ahead of me tomorrow morning when I get home. I will report back tomorrow. Guess it is recovery time for my bananas!!!!

Sorry to hear about your bad luck. Bananas, at least, will bounce back. I hope you have minimal long-term damage.

Sorry to hear that buddy .
I'm sure the whole community feels the same. You're an amazing gardener though ,so it should be on its way to its former glory soon. |

Re: All heck broke loose in SE TN!!!
Holy cow, Randy!!! Oh man, I'm sorry to hear the bad news. The wind knocking over a 60 gallon pot must have been blowing really hard. I didn't think that TN or the mid-south even had a chance of t'storms today. It was 100 degrees for the high both yesterday and today here. I hope the damage isn't too bad and that it's only superficial with leaves and branches down. Let's hope that your prized plants were spared. I'll be thinking about you buddy. We all know how much work you put into your garden and yard. Keep me updated, my friend. If you need anything at all, please let me know.
Austin

Don't say that, Pauly!!! Actually, the wife called back and said it didn't apprear that the house sustained any damage which in itself seems strange. Thankful but not sure what happened... Hard part is not being there to see for myself what damage there was. I will try and snap a few pics before I start cleaning up in the morning. Wife and youngest daughter have already turned up some of my smaller potted plants and my 45 gallon CIDP, so that at least is done... Thanks for your concern and genuine response... |

Re: All heck broke loose in SE TN!!!
Randy,
I hope there isn't irrepairable property damage or to your plants. Ditto on donating plants. I don't have a big selection but have pups on what I do have and they're yours if yours have been damaged. Let us know how things are. Deb |

Update!!!!
After getting home this morning, I realize how over zealous my neighbor was in announcing a microburst... I honestly do not believe we had one, just a strong Tstorm with very strong winds. I was able to clean everything up and trim all the damage away to get going again. I did lose a few large annuals, (ie, castor beans, etc.) but after I removed them, I realized, "hey, this gives me more planting room!!!". Anwyway, it still amazes me at how fast plants can bounce back. Within a few hours in the calm sunny weather this morning, alot of the plants were already showing signs of straighten back up.
Thanks for everyones concerns. Here are a few pics of what I came home to... Spread out Manihot... Wonder which way the wind was coming from??? Quick look after a little clean up... Look at all the extra planting room!!! I was treated to a bloom from my White Texas Star which is the same as the Red one I posted last week or so, but white... Well, DUH!!! I would like to say one more thing. After all the kind responses I got from alot of you, I realized, again, just how special of a place this is. Even though it turned out to be minor, just knowing that if it had been worse, there were alot of you that were willing to offer to help get me started again. This board is more than just a board, I truly think it IS becoming a "family" of sorts. Even if it is a family of lunatics!!!! Thanks again to everyone and I appreciate all the kind words... |

Re: All heck broke loose in SE TN!!!
Wow, Randy, you got it cleaned up and looking good!
Is your Sabal palmetto going to be ok? It seems to be very brown rather than pushing the tight growth I typically see from Hurricane Cut ones... |

Re: All heck broke loose in SE TN!!!
Thank goodness that palm is ok!!!! The yard looked pretty messed up before you cleaned it up! Glad to hear plants are straightening back up with the sun. I bet it could have been a lot worse if you didn't have such healthy plants.

Re: All heck broke loose in SE TN!!!
Glad to hear it wasn't worse!!! Congrats on Texas star bloom, all your plants look so happy and healthy, maybe the star wanted to show you it's appreciation for your obvious love for your plants. again Glad to hear it wasn't worse. I think you have the coolest yard, Thanks for the pics and the inspiration..

The palmetto has bit the dust. I purchased it last spring from a nursery that received them not hurricane cut and not even balled and burlapped. The owner and I had traded some plants and seeds in the past and he made me such a good deal and told me that if it did not make it, he would replace it. Well, I went ahead and brought it home which was a 3 hour drive, hurricane cut it, and planted it within 6 hours of them pulling it up out of the wet sand they had it in. Jump ahead to this week, after waiting and monitoring all spring, I finally came to the realization that it did not make it. I emailed the owner of the nursery, not so much to ask for a replacement, but to advise him again that he should find another source for his palmettos because they will almost never survive the transplant unless they are hurricane cut and the root ball is B&B'd. Well, to my surprise, even thought it has been a year and a half, he is willing to replace it. I am working out the details with him now and if he is willing to wait until next May, I may try him again. I will definitely make sure it is prepped properly and has been cared for properly before I take it. Hey, it is a free 10' palm and I could still drive another 2 hours south to another nursery that many of my friends have recommended for one... Keep your fingers crossed. Randy |
