Default 20 Hands of Ae Ae / A dilemma

Yes I will have 20 hands of Ae Ae ripening in the next few weeks. It's too much for the family to consume. I will post when they are ripe enough to pick and people can stop by for a hand. Members who know were I live just let me know that you will come by. Others can send a private message and I will tell you where to go. Wow I have been telling people were to go for a long time, but this is a positive 'were to go'.

With so much to eat, I need Ae Ae recipes. If you have a good recipe please send it to me and the best ones will be given an orchid plant. Mature divisions of one of the plants marked 'An Ae
Ae prize' The pictures are on my site:
http://togofcoralgables.com/FlowersofNov07.aspx

Sorry, no plants or fruit will be sent by post. You have to be here.

A friend of mine from Puerto Rico says Ae Ae makes some of the best dried bananas. He is on sabattical right now nad living near me and gave me some to try a month or so ago and I thought it was great. They cut it in slices lengthwise and dried these long slices to the point where they were still chewy.

Congrats, Jordon!

Sounds great Jordon! Here's those recent pics from your gallery.

PM forthcoming!

It was nice to see the two Ae Ae bunches side by side the other day when we were there. Pretty amazing, what a beautiful sight! You have a beautiful home.

miss anna, i did a boo-boo. i asked a nurseryman if he could get "ae ae". he said he didnt know but hed look into it.....now after seeing the koolist nanas in the world, thats at the top of my ever growing wish list. so now i wait. and even though i dont have anyone to throw a fit about how many nanas i have or how much money i spend.....i just dont know how i can justify 125.-200. for one single nana tree. let me rephrase that, one of the most koolist single nana trees ive seen! if i think hard enough, i might be able to justify it by.....

I would LOVE - of course! - An AE AE here. But was told it wouldn't survive our heat here. STILL - I'd LOVE to try one!

After reading some replies, I started to think. I grow the Ae Ae along with mango avocado and a few things that are rare. I wish I could grow apples and pears but the puny ones that grow here are not worth growing. I know better then to grow tulips in Coral Gables. I admire people in temperate climates that grow tropical plants. Bananas are a good choice. But the Ae Ae is really a problematic. Longwood Garden grew the Ae Ae for many years and then lost it. I gave them one and they kept it alive for 3 years. If they have a problem, think what a problem it is for one person to grow it. At this time I want more people to grow it in a climate that is to the plants liking. If the warming keeps up, many of you will be able to grow the Ae Ae.
Forty five years ago I tried to grow breadfruit. We were too cold for it and I lost it(I tried twice). This year I planted a breadfruit with great hopes of success. There is a home in the area that has a large one with fruit. I am so sure that I am collecting recipes.

i just could not possibly get one and then watch it die...that would just hurt wayyyyyyy to much.so i figure start small and if i move back to fl. (gainsville) then and only then, maybe i could try one. til that time, its wishful wanting. i have 12 nanas now that i divide my time with.. but i think its worth it! i am trying pomegranets...and pineapples.( we have little roots so far). i would like to try pawpaw. my dad says they are good, so maybe in the spring. i dont like apples, so i dont grow them. my daughter got this HUGE lemon at the nursery the other day and no joke it is about 6 in. around. when she cuts it, im digging out seeds and planting. i also want to try oranges, and mango.(yummy, yummy) im from fl. i love any citrus. thats why im always on here, i can find out what works and what doesnt.

MsKitty,

You should be able to grow Paw-paws (Asimina triloba) in your area; they are quite hardy. We had tons of them in the woods of Western KY where I grew up.

The lemon you mentioned sounds like 'Ponderosa'. It gets to be about the size of a grapefruit! Quite impressive! When I used to live in St. Louis I got seed from one of them and have been growing it in a pot for about 6 years now. No fruit yet but it should be getting about time. Citrus grown from seed always takes awhile to fruit as opposed to one's started from cuttings.

I figure my odds are 50% from what I've read so I will soon have three good size Ae Ae potted and warm inside my shop and will hope for the best and plant them out in late April or May. I plan to have an overhead misting system which should help with our dry climate. I will probabl plant the Ae Ae in the center of my group of about 30 bananas (26 varieties) to baby them even more. If I get pups I will pot some up and bring them inside late next fall. If not, I will probably whack the Ae Ae back, pot them up, and bring them back inside and hope for pups and fruit the following year. I hope to have a greenhouse some day and would eventually keep them in there for part of the year. I have more resources than most and think it's worth a try. I don't disagree at all with your efforts to get them more established there in Floriday, Jordon, and admire your brother's program! I just wish you were closer so I could try some fruit!
