All right, let me start by saying that I didn't mean to cause such a ruckus on this forum. When I first posted this I had no idea about the rarity of the needle, I'm new to palms. Nor did I mean to offend anyone by suggesting taking from the wild. I can't say I agree with everything said but a lot of good points were made. I have decided against taking anything from the wild in an attempt to respect nature. Everyone has their views on what is right and wrong when dealing with nature but I think it is important to keep an open mind. Hopefully someone can lead me in the right direction on finding a decent size palm for my garden. I am way to impatient to grow from seed or nurture a tiny plant for 10 years but I can work with a "good start". Everyone thanks for the suggestions and the input. Let me know if anything arises. Hey Nate, no harm done man. No harm intended either! If you consider the cost of gas for a trip to Texas for you, plus lodging, food, etc., you can get a good-sized palm shipped to you for cheaper more than likely, and it will be much more likely to live. I don't know about their inventory, but Jungle Music in CA has lots of large-sized palms for sale. You might try Horticultural Consultants in Houston, TX also. They both have great websites too. Nate, no problem! I just wanted to educate you about the native palms. They are really interesting, and if you ever get a chance, it's fun searching for them. You really can't appreciate palms growing in their native environment until you see them for yourself. Then, you will have a whole new appreciation for them. Nate, while possibly not as hardy as you're looking for, I got a good size Washingtonia Robusta, the Mexican Fan Palm, for $39.99 at a local nursery. I believe it was a Monrovia plant. In its pot it is as tall as me (to the top of the leaves), with a solid trunk.

For New Jersey I'll have to bring it indoors for the winter, but further south who knows?

I too, should have some extra S. minor -Texas eco type- seeds later this fall. This is the 4th year I've gotten seeds from this plant with really great germination.

I may even have some fair size potted Needles, Tracheys, & several verities of Sables that I could part with.
