Re: Who's GROWING POMAGRANATES?

What ya need to know?
"Wonderful" is a pretty old cultivar, very common out here in CA & should do just fine by you in LA (the state). Great for juicing.
They don't usually require a lot of messing with, if you mulch with well rotted manure & compost in the spring it'll love ya.

You should be sittin' "fat & happy" then! :nanadrink:
They do have a little better fruit production if they have a pal nearby they can borrow pollen from, guessing 'up to' 20% - 25% more fruit if a cross-pollinator is available.
You're pretty much in a sweet spot as far as climate goes, probably won't even have to water much.
They like lots of sun but handle partial shade, same with soil conditions; tolerates standing water but prefers fairly well draining & even tolerates brackish water, according to my buddy in FL.
A google should give ya the fine tuning info; look for websites at: "CRFG", "Purdue", & "UC Davis", or just do searches with "pomegranate" plus the above terms.

Re: Who's GROWING POMAGRANATES?

I grew them for a few years, never had the opportunity to taste a ripe fruit.

Birds would eat 100% of the fruit before they were even close to ripe.

The thorns were long and sharp.

I grow Pomagranates but the the type you have. I do know that Pomagranates do not like a lot of water. The plant can get root rot.

If by pg tree you mean Pomagranates they are not a tree but a shrub. Can grow up to twenty feet tall.Get you some deer netting to keep the deer away. Lowes should sell it. I use to use the stuff for my garden when I lived on my farm. Will keep the birds off your fruits and stuff.

When I was studying these plant, before I planted mine, I read that they grow in the in the middle east. Iran, Iraq, Israel. All these countries get cold in the winter. In Biblical times they grew them also. I am sure they did cover them back then. I never cover mine. They will lose their leaves in the winter. But re-sprout in the spring.

Re: Who's GROWING POMAGRANATES?

I do not know what type I am growing, but I took a cutting from a type that I found growing in GA. I planted it about this time last year and it really took off. I have 6 dwarf PG, but learned the hard way the fruit is not for eating. LoL I should post a pic of my PG because the growth from stick cutting to what looks like a bush in 1 year is pretty impressive. Does anyone know how long it will be before I get fruit? I did not know there was male and female flowers either. Now I have to question, Do I need 2 trees to get fruit at all?

Darkman 06-30-2013 12:20 PM

Re: Who's GROWING POMAGRANATES?

No. Two are not needed but recommended. Now having said that I understand there are a few POM's that just won't set fruit without a pollinator, I don’t remember which ones that is but they were not the common ones you normally see for sale. You will get a heavier fruit set with a pollinator.

Of mine I have one Wonderful that is four years old and three three year old Red Angels. This year I had heavy blooms on all trees but only the RA set fruit. I think I have about a dozen fruit hanging out of hundreds of blooms. The vast majority of my blooms were male.

My biggest fruit is about the size of a tennis ball now with just a hint of color. I used absolutely no Winter protection. About water, POM's want consistent watering. How you achieve that is especially difficult if you live in the South where you can get three inches of rain and then nothing for a week or two. That is why most people think they don't need a lot of water as they come from dry climates. My method is I don't worry about it. They reside on the edge of my citrus grove. They get watered when the citrus do but being on the edge may not get as much as the citrus.

My method is unproven so don't take it as Gospel. My plants are growing and healthy looking. I looked at quite a few pictures of mature POM's in commercial groves and what I observed is that they are not the most prolific fruiters. They are definitely not like citrus where they are covered in fruit. Sparsely is the term that came to my mind so my low fruit set doesn’t bother me and my trees are still young. I think next year will be much better with maybe a couple dozen per tree. We'll see.

Oh yeah those thorns are a bit of a cruel joke. They are more like needles, thin, very sharp and brittle. They will jam in you and then break off subsurface requiring you to dig then out.

Also I would not call these shrubs ornamental at all as they have a very haphazard growth habit and the branches are not strong growing upright for a while and then flopping over in a little wind never to go back up again. Some are worse than others about this and I guess as they mature and lose limbs eventually they will form a small tree like shape.

I only grow these because my wife loves them. I probably will too when I taste the result of my labor. Home grown is always the best.

Thanks for reading my amateurish ramblings.

AS ALWAYS IMHO AND YOUR MILEAGE MAY DIFFER!!!!!!!!

Re: Who's GROWING POMAGRANATES?

I cut mine down and dug up the stump last weekend. Over the years the very few fruits that I actually harvested were much smaller than a tennis ball in size. Most fell off the tree before getting to that size, or split on the tree or just disappeared. Decided I wasted enough yard space on it over the years for hardly anything in return.
Much easier to just go to the wholesale store and buy the box of 4 softball sized ones.

Re: Who's GROWING POMAGRANATES?

I picked my first Red Angel Pom yesterday. My wife said it was good. I have had rain almost every day for the last three weeks. I had no splitting and my wife said it was good. It is my desire to get enogh production to make POM juice. This year I had about a dozen fruit. My largest dissappeared day before yesterday and that is why I picked this one. The arils seemed full and the color was good.

I have three Angel Reds and one Wonderful. The Wonderful is at least a year older and has never held any fruit. If they don't get a lot more productive I will sacrifice all but one and replace them with either Kumquats or Figs both of which are very prolific here.

Wow thanks for the info...I too hope to one day soon be able to make my own POM juice the $9.99 price per half gallon from the grocery store is tough to swallow. I try to drink 8 oz of Pom juice daily.

I have a question though the fruit started out red but has turned almost green (as you can see in the picture) they get older is that natural?

Thanks in advance for your opinion

I don't have the experience to say for sure but I believe your's will start turning back to reddish orange as it reaches maturity. Mine may have been red when they first started. That certainly is the flower color.
