Default While digging in the yard

I found these.

I haven't cut down any vegetation in this area; my neighbor might have but these were a foot inside of the fence. I have been cleaning up the jungle and have actually been to the end of my lot; I have seen and touched the fence! Any clue what they are?

I did find a grub today but it was much smaller and I didn't eat it. These are 4" long! I don't believe the brown one is that "potato" vine tuber; I've pulled up a lot of those.

Search Smilax or Florida Greenbrier for the bottom two.
Phillip's Natural World: Florida's Thorniest Natives
On the link, almost at the bottom is a picture of a pile of the tubers.
I have dug them up in my yard.

I tasted those bitter leaves as a child; I swore off eating anything dandy ever again. About a year before I left OH, I read about buds and took a chance. YUM! Now that I live in a "puff ball free" area I'm kicking myself for waiting so long...

From Dangermouses post..

Ummm ......yea..... you can dig some up and send some north .....I'll give a report.....LOL WHOA ....who knew..

Quote from article,,,,,
Seeds and roots are edible but hardly worth the effort to obtain them. Florida panhandle natives (and old timers) were known to—as late as the 1960s—make a tea from the plant to "give a man courage" (sex aid). In the Carolinas, milky sap of the root was mixed with Smilax laurifolia (see below) and steeped in whiskey or gin to increase male potency.

Drat and darn! I do have a few thorny vines in my yard and these tubers seemed a lot larger than betony. Guess I'll be putting my trophies into the trash can; nothing that nasty belongs in the recycling container or a pot. I would like to grow betony; it sounds delicious.

Sadly this one is not a Jerusalem artichoke. However, I do have some tall yellow flowers in the back of the jungle I'm going to dig up and check. If I don't have any, I know where to purchase tubers. They're very invasive if not handled carefully but do have a nice crisp tuber.

No gloves; they cramp my style. "Look you can pick up a thin dime wearing Playtex gloves." Not me.

No digging right now. I'm taking down the chicken coop/rabbit hutch eyesore. It's about 12 x 12. Apparently it was put together by those blind men who described an elephant using materials gathered by the road that both discerning pickers and the trash guys had passed by. Wire sides include at least 6 types of fence/mesh secured with screws, nails, zipties, etc. (Haven't found bread ties yet...) Cheap and frugal, I'm carefully saving what I can; fence in back needs a new section. (Apparently they used that on the coop.)

The roof came down unexpectedly; though I jumped back quickly, my thighs got nicked. I guess if I'd been wearing gloves...

But I will be digging when it's gone. I'm not wasting 12" of ancient rabbit/chicken poop.
