My fig tree is making fruit and my spaghetti squash is about to flower! I'll post some pics when its worth showing (the figs right now are only about 2cm ).

Tony, how big was your Barbados cherry when it first started fruiting? Where'd you get it from. I have two small ones I just potted up into 5 gallon pots.

Black Tartarian is a real cherry, Prunus avium. Barbados Cherry is Malpighia glabra, not a real cherry.

Wow! I Didn't know they had 'not real' cherries!
I had a Stella Cherry I found at Costco but it didn't make it.I was so sad to lose that one. I just dug it up yesterday and put a Williams in it's place for now, till I find another tree to put there in the spring.

I guess it's called Barbados cherry because the fruit looks like a cherry.
I also lost a Stella this spring. I made the tree, (I grafted it) about 30 years ago, with budwood that I got from the Canadian Agricultural Experimental Station, in Summerland, B. C. After all these years, it uprooted in a storm.
An interesting story about Stella. They are brigtht red, when ripe, not purple. When we got our first crop, while waiting for them to turn dark, they rotted.

Tony, thanks for the info on Barbados cherry. I got one from Wellsprings and one from Logee's. Both are growing well. Maybe I'll get fruit next year.

sdpanther, from what I understand, there are only two true cherry cultivars that might fruit reliably in the warm SD climate: Royal Lee and Minnie Royal -- and you have to have them both because they are not self fertile. They are low-chill varieties. The rest of the real cherries need more cold than you will get if you are anywhere near the coast. You might want to try a "fake" cherry, like Barbados cherry or Surinam cherry (Pitanga).
