Joy Re: What'cha got sprouting? (other plants)

Here are some Sundew seeds I was able to germinate in 10 days in my aero-garden. The other carnivorous seeds on the sponge are purple pitcher plant, but they're not up quite yet.

You'll need to magnify the shot to see the miniscule sprouts...

This is a little "Dixter" burgundy Romaine...

Happy sprouting, gang.

Hi Sherry,

the envelope with the seeds just went into the mail box (won't go out until tomorrow anyway). So I am home
free and it is from now on just between you and Canada Post

I hope it will arrive on or before Friday, so it and you won't be delayed by the weekend.
Best,
Olaf

Default Wholy Shmokes!

These things are faster than Formula 1 race cars!

This Photo was taken yesterday morning and is already out of date

This one followed this morning less than 24 hrs later, and already I am worried about their
“Lebensraum”

Unfortunately I have only room for 15 plants, as measured by the space my trays need. 14 were already
spoken for by other plants. In order to accommodate 4 Castor Beans, I had to improvise:

In order to give them max. soil with min. space I opted to cut the bottom out of 4 small square pots and
stapled them together

Then I filled a large square pot half full of soil so that the small pots will reach the top of it. Thus four
plants can now share a large pot without the roots getting too tangled

Pots - not yet soaked down with warm water - without the plants…

…and as of this morning – with the plants

Though before I planted them into their new environment, I thought it prudent to show, that their root
systems develop equally fast as the tops

There they are now, with their own little place in the sun (whenever it shines ), to the right of the
Basjoo pup

Poisonous House and Garden Plants For Pets and Humans.

I should have made this a link, but I encourage everyone who is sprouting new plants to check it out, in case you are not aware of the toxicity of the plant material you are handling. I grow many of these varieties myself, they tend to be extremely attractive and thus desirable. Most important is that you share your knowledge with guests to your garden, and make sure they are aware that these plants protect themselves with toxins, and we all should respect them accordingly. Not meant to discourage horticultural adventures, but as a community service......Happy (responsible) sprouting!

p.s. Castor bean falls about 4 or 5 on most lists, primarily the seed. #1 most lists is oleander....both beautiful, but potentially deadly

This is a weird looking sprout!

One of the Mexican Bird of Paradise has really taken off!

These are my little tomato spouts that had the leaves eaten off them. They are making new leaves so hopefully they will make it!

My red and green Mango sprouts have been re-potted because they were both touching the ceiling of their sprouting dome:

Thanks, JaNan, I filed that URL away for future reference. The big danger about Castor Beans is, that the seeds are so beautiful, inviting small children to play with them.

Default Re Wholy Shmokes: Progress Report

I took some more pics yesterday, 1 week after transplanting the Castor Beans:

To refresh: This is what the "beans" looked like right after transplanting

7 days later: The rapid progress is made clear, when you see, how high they have grown up on
the Basjoo pup. I have tried to take this photo from the same perspective as last week's.

This pic. shows it all in more detail

The explosive grows appears to have slowed down a bit, since the secondary(?)* leaves have appeared.

*I could use some help here. I have tried to google that, but could not get anywhere. When seeds first
germinate they almost always always push through the soil with two oval shaped leaves, which I
thought were called 'primary leaves', while the next set, which resembles more the shape of the leaf
of the species were called secondary leaves, but I could not find any confirmation of that.

This is for Olafhenny...and anyone else propogating from seed. There are two basic types of seed plants, monocots and dicots, referring to the appearance of the seed structure, the dicots having two (di) halves, which split to become the primary (sometimes referred to as false as well) leaves. These are essentially storage features, containing the undeveloped embryo, food energy in the form of starches, and initial moisture, proteins and nutrients to enable the seed to sprout. Your initial growth spurt is almost entirely the result of this stored food and water. Once the secondary or first set of "true" leaves develop, the seedling will begin to photosynthesis it's own food from sunlight, water and CO2 in the air. This is often a stage where 1/2 or 1/4 strength solutions of some form of liquid fertilizer can benefit the growth of the new seedling. Less is more, as the new roots can easily be burned by overly rich fertilizing. Hope that is of some help, and what you were looking for!
