Mr. Giant Plants in Florida!......LOL.....That is a good one Mike!..... I am referring to the Costa Rican Malanga Lila (Purple Malanga)!.....I usually get them down here in Florida, on Sundays at The Organic/Wholesale Food Market Place!.... Scientific Name: Xanthosoma Sagittifolium An herbaceous perennial plant. It has underground stem, from which sprout swollen, lateral and horizontal shoots, known as cormels. It is oriented to human consumption. The corms are used for human and animal food, thanks to its nutritional content. A countless number of dishes are prepared with it, such as: soft drinks, beverages, soups, pastas, salads, sweets, breads, cakes, cookies and ice-cream..... A very nutritious food!....

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Malanga.
I picked mine up at the market and have grown them ever since for the awesome tropical foliage. Never have eaten them though. Easy to grow and overwinter in containers in zone 5/6. Btw your plants are beasts....Looking good. Waiting for " New corms #3" .This is a malanga repot carnage photo......I should eat them instead of repotting them. For Sunday breakfast I might make Goetta, eggs and hash browns( shredded malanga) and toast. Can you smoke them? Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Started some Thai Giant Elephant Ear seeds today. Some where last years '16 and some '17 (I guess that is last year now). We will see if any of these.
Will become these.

Getting a jump dividing dormant small/mini ferns and hostas.
Bonsai pots improve the presentation of super small plants. Circle of friends(left) have the centers cut out for fern and hosta placement. . Potting up some hosta for spring by Hostafarian, on Flickr |

Put up some of the dwarfs the last few days.
Dwarf plants under 4 feet are an easy grow under lights for the few months for winter. Last edited by cincinnana : 04-22-2021 at 08:40 PM. |

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
I did move many plants indoors for a few more days during this cold snap...
Putting a heavy plant on the trim mower makes moving heavy plants so much easier. . Spring is the time to carefully split your small pups. .. Time to fill the terra cotta.. Last edited by cincinnana : 04-22-2021 at 08:56 PM. |

Spring ..
Time to repot, replant, split, and refresh the soil in your containers and planters. Rejuvenate the soilless mix for best plant performance. It's like getting a new plant each time. Planter maintenance by Hostafarian, on Flickr |

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
rhizome of heliconia indica 'spectabilis' aka illustris 'rubricaulis' (pink striped)
At $68.99, including shipping, this is the most expensive plant I ever bought. In the mid 1980s, I got several rhizomes for free from a Mr. Howard Cooper in Hana, Maui, Hawaii. These won't grow outdoors in Florida because they are very cold sensitive. |

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Today I planted onion sets for their round flower spikes as a landscape plant.
They should add some interesting visual interest. |
