Orange tamarillo (tree tomato). This is winner in my book. I've only harvested a few so far, but I really like the flavor. It has surprising elements of papaya flavor to me.

Peel, simmer till tender. In the AM slice and add good olive oil, fresh chopped garlic, little salt and sliced onions. Let stand at room temp all day and serve at dinner time. Same recipe as for Guineos en escabeche.

If you are a yucca fan you will really love it done this way.

It's cherimoya season! This is the Dr. White variety, a very fast grower in my yard.

Awesome!

We grow Sugar Apple (Annona squamosa) and they are excellent out of hand.

What do you do with the Cherimoya's?

Sounds like we do the same thing you do with sugar apple, eat it out of hand, avoid the skin and seeds. Delicious, very sweet, juicy white flesh.

it's too bad we can't grow true cherimoyas in fl due to the humidity. the closest we get is the dream cherimoya which is really an atemoya.

I've been doing a little "indoor gardening" during the winter (brought most of these plants inside back in September), and this our harvest.......

Varigate Kumquat, growing in our covered but unheated garden (to protect from the damp)

Babaco Papaya - picture taken a couple of weeks ago....we ate it this morning

Mango....it'll be awhile before this one is ready though.....
FYI, this tree is only about 2.5ft tall

Wow this is amazing, I've never head of a mango holding fruit this far north, I know I definitely have never achieved this. Did u buy a grafted plant? Also where did you get the babaco papaya? Did u start from seeds?

I've tried starting both these plants from seed but have not managed to keep them beyond a few weeks, if they even start at all - don't know if the soil is too cold or what because I've tried many different ways (including heating the soil) and many different mediums but so far no luck. The best I was able to achieve was a Julie mango that I started from seed (brought it back from St. Vincent) and it survived for just over a year before it took a turn and I was unable to revive it

As for these two, I got the papaya during a local annual exotic plant sale in May of 2013 when if was only about 30" and now it is about 5'; FYI, this is the same plant I was looking for help with last winter when it lost ALL its leaves....but it made a great comeback this past spring and only has 1 fruit left to ripen; we've eaten the other 9....
I also got the mango during the plant sale in May of 2014; it appears to be graphed but I was still shocked to see it flower during the summer and then produce fruit! - especially considering its height.

Both these plants (as well as other exotics) spend the summer and early fall in a double-walled poly carb greenhouse before coming into the house, and I guess they really like these conditions because this is the result.....

Babaco does not produce from it's own seed. It is a naturally occurring sterile hybrid from central and south america. Humans propagate it by cutting. In nature the plant also sprouts from broken limbs brought down by storms onto the fertile mulch in its native environment. Seeds also sprout when the two parent species are in proximity. The seeds of another species called mountain papaya or mountain paw paw (Vasconcellea pubescens) are sometimes sold online as Babaco to unsuspecting buyers.

Thanks Richard. How do the seeds sprout when the parents are in close proximity, if the parents are sterile? I always though babaco was the mountain papaya, but now I learn that they are a different species. Is there anymore information you can provide me, it would be much appreciated. Also if any one knows any sources of this plant in Canada please let us know, I've looked for this one for a while, but people around here just generally have no idea what im talking about.

The parents I was referring to are individuals of Vasconcellea cundinamarcensis (syn. Carica pubescens), and Vasconcellea stipulata (syn. Carica stipulata).
