JoeReal - one of the few things I miss from the UK is the spring blossom - thanks for posting those pics - just gorgeous.

Now - what do I have in bloom atm - well squids of heliconias of all sorts, torch ginger, red ginger, phalanopsis, dendrobiums, palms, passieflora vitifolia and edulis, anthurium, begonias, lemon, lime, small flowered roses, plumeria. Just taken the machete to the passieflora especially the edulis as they were taking over.

Miss tulips though!!!

Haha! I used to have lots in my English garden - variegated parrot tulips, tall red and yellow ones and cute little dwarf ones - now I get my fix by reading Dutch bulb catalogues.

when i move back to fl, i will miss my peonies and glads. the only way i can have them is if i live close to jacksonville. but i want to be farther south. i could put them in pots and then in the freezer, but they have to have 45 days of almost freezing (so they say) to get blooms.and yes the tulips will be in the freezer mix. i love parrot tulips. my mom has some coral- orange ones. finally afer 3 yrs of BEGGING i got some.

Well - these are not strictley in my garden but are everywhere and just gorgeous - the local name is Carolina, and they have realy girly flowers.

The ground underneath is covered in pink tassles and the people who have them near pools curse them. I would love to have one!!

I can't find anything out about them - must get myself a new book about tropical trees and shrubs. I only know the local name for this huge widespreading tree and google gives me nothing. I doubt if it is at all hardy though. Nice that they lose their large leaves before they flower, so that the blooms show so well.

That tree is a species of Calliandra, often called Pink Powderpuff. The species sold in San Diego nurseries is hardy in USDA zone 9.

Richard - I have been looking up calliandra - and as far as I can see, they are bi-pinnate and shrubby small trees flowering throughout the year. Saw a lot of similar powderpuff acacia types in Africa.

Well the ones we have here have large heart-shaped leaves, flower once in the spring on bare wood, and form huge widespreading trees with massive branches. Say 40ft high and a spread of 60ft with thick low branches - a treeclimbing childs dream. Don't sound quite the same - but if you can pin down what they are - I am really interested!
