Okay, the flower of the Winter Jasmine in the first photo is not the showiest thing on earth,... ...but you have to appreciate, that I cut some twigs off in early November last year and had them blooming later that month in the house, used them for Christmas table decorations, they opened up outside in late January/early February and now, on the first of May there are still some blooming. The second shot shows a section of the front yard of our home. You can probably tell, that I am pretty sold on ground covers for weed control. ![]() That is actually very effective, I have used it for about ½ dozen years now and the only things, capable to penetrate through them, are bulb plants such as crocus, daffodils, tulips etc. Some more details of the ground covers. There is still some winter damage, although fading This picture shows my only flowering shrub in bloom at this time, an early rhododendron as glimpsed through some Japanese Maple twigs

OK.. this isn't in my yard but it's about an hour south of where we're moving to. 125 year old Rhododendron.. breathtaking and NOT photoshopped.

Okay, These pictures are not of my garden, but of the front gate in our gated community, planted
in a volunteer effort by myself. The first three pictures show sections of a little rose garden, which I planted around our main entrance sign last spring Until the roses take over in June, the ground covers will have to 'hold the fort' in terms of colours The roses have not really leafed out yet and therefore do not show up very well in these pictures The potentially hot and dry corner between the street sidewalk and our access is a job for sedums and thymes The next three show sections of a different entrance area, which is dominated by a large densely leafed maple tree and which I planted 3 years ago. This area is more mature and the weed control is almost completely effective. The bare soil near the middle of the picture is due to a new planting effort I was replacing the terribly intrusive asters with Autumn Monkshood, which will supposedly have similar colour and bloom time and is hopefully better behaved. For this year I still leave them side by side for comparison The Winter Blooming Heather in the top centre has provided colour since early March, even though it is a bit muted now, but the Lace Leaf Elder along the left edge has not enough leaves yet to establish a presence. The shade of the maple tree makes it difficult to photograph some of the area, but the Periwinkle near the top of the picture love it.
