Hi Jezebel,

I noticed only this morning, that you live in Izmir, on the beautiful Aegean coast of Turkey. Therefore the ‘monster acorns’ I depicted here...: Banana Gallery - DSC02711 ...are probably not news for you.

I picked them up somewhere along the coastal hills of your Aegean shores, maybe in Bergama or at Selçuk (Ephesus?).

I was born and raised in a region, where oak trees were dominant in the forests, but I had never seen any acorns, which even came close in size.
Best,
Olaf

Hiya Re: What is blooming in your garden today (other plants)?

I was surprised by mine one morning as well, Hazel. They sure are cheerful & colorful. I think they look like little mini pink lilies! Mine has stopped growing in my bathroom window now but I can't wait until springtime...

Here's what I've got blooming...

"Carnival Purple" Thanksgiving Cactus.

Hi Hazel,
first let me apologize for addressing you by your moniker instead of your name. Old geezers do get confused some times

Just to give others here a small glimpse of how beautiful your ‘neck of the woods' can be I am attaching a picture of a beach shot from the highway above, about 25 km north of Kaş.

Fear not, there is a long, but quite safe stairway leading down to the beach.

Best,
Olaf

Best of all, they bloom during the darkest and botanically most cheerless time of the year. -- Great picture, BTW, thanks.
Best,

Hi Olaf ,
This place Patara beach .
"Patara beach is one of the largest and most beautiful beaches near the ancient city of Patara in Turkey.
At 18 kilometres, Patara beach is the longest in its region and sometimes reaches a width of 200-300 metres. The beach has soft sand and shallow sea. It is the one of the places that sea turtle leave their eggs. Because of this, the beach is under protection. At its Eastern-most point there is a rocky outcrop looking over a spectacular rocky cove."

I like Patara too .

Hi Caloosamusa,

your gorgeous pictures make those of us living in frigid climes outright jealous. But wait until spring then we will dazzle you with our colours.

You are not letting us know, where you live, or at least your hardiness zone?

Best,
Olaf

Hi Hazel,

well while it is adjacent to Patara, it is actually just east of it and distinguishes itself from Patara by the steep shores and by being non-commercial.

During our first visit to the area, in 2004, we stopped in Patara, but at that time some hotel operation had taken control of the beach and was charging outrageous prices. $3.- for coke, you could not rent an umbrella without renting a lounge as well, etc.. This caused us to cut our visit there short.

When we returned in 2008, that nonsense had been discontinued, but we still bypassed Patara and moved straight on to Kaş.
Best,
Olaf

Good afternoon Olaf,

The area where I live is supposed to be zone 10A, I am about 500 meters from the Southwest Florida Coast. "Normally" we are supposed to get a freeze once every two years. For the last three years we've been hit with many freezes, about two per year, and last year about six light freezes.

I hope this answers your questions.

Good weather and good growing!

It does. And there goes 'global warming for you!

Earnestly, according to meteorologists the average temps of the planet have been rising the last few years, I just wonder where. - Probably in those places, which can least take it, the ones, which are already hot and arid.
Best,
Olaf

Congrats to Olaf, Hazel, Sherry, Caloosamusa, Emily, Ante, and ...

I second Olaf's opinion that Caloosamusa grow some cool looking plants that can wow us. Besides Jaboticaba, I was most impressed by Caloosamusa's mango and papayas trees.

So looking forward to see your spring flowers, Olaf. I wish I can say the same.
