I obtained special permission to tour the Subtropical Fruit Orchard at the UCR Botanic Gardens. This area is not normally open to the public and the gates are padlocked. There are a pretty wide variety of trees that are not typically found in one collection. Most of the trees are 25+ years old. At one time, they had bananas, but those appear to have died (there are still a few markers in the ground).
Sorry for the picture quality, I was using my smart phone. Here is a sampling of the trees in the collection: Balsamocitrus dawei White Sapote 'DV' Costa Rican Guava Unlabeled White Sapote Vernon White Sapote Hachaya Persimmon Fuyu Persimmon American Persimmon Gold Nugget Loquat Advance Loquat Flying Dragon Li Jujube Lang Jujube Dr. White Cherimoya Pierce Cherimoya Atemoya Black Sapote Dr. Beaumont Macadamia Sweetheart Pomegranate Eversweet Pomegranate Wonderful Pomegranate Granada Pomegranate Pineapple Gem Pineapple Guava Red Beard Pineapple Guava Coolidge Pineapple Guava Common Quince Last edited by GoAngels : 03-30-2011 at 06:36 PM. |
