Default Tripple crown pineapple!

Nope, it's not photoshoped, it's real! After harvesting I decided to let the plant grow a ratoon crop. It grew 3 fruits that are getting just as big as the fruit I harvested, and one of them has three crowns! I will plant it after harvesting and see what happens.

Very cool, Mitchel. Are these 'Sugarloaf'? I can't remember now, had brain overload. I have four plants in pots and will have to put them in the greenhouse this winter.

That is an interesting looking crown! I read that you can cut a regular single crown into 4 sections to get more plants off of it.

Did you do anything to promote fruiting? I have one sugarloaf I got off of ebay last winter. It's in a pot and so far has been a real slow grower.

If you scroll about half way down this website there's a great drawing of a plant that has all the parts labeled. There's so much information here that I haven't even gotten all the way through it.

Yes, this one is Sugarloaf.

dghays, that is one crazy looking pineapple!! On mine all three are joined into one base kinda like Siamese twins. It looks like yours actually has some separate crowns that can be grown individually. Is this correct?

Deb, I just feed and water them. Nothing special here!

Yes, I'd bet yours could also be separated into 3 plants too.

The triple crown is for real! It's 3 tops in one that can not be separated! The fruit tasted awesome too!

Thanks for the photo, Mitchel. Looks great! I have 4 smaller plants growing in pots at this time, hoping to get fruit next year or so.

I've been told that the core of this variety is even better for eating than the typical ones sold in markets, etc. I noticed you cut it out, at least partially. Did you try it? I've also been told that this variety ships poorly. The texture looks soft. Is it?

When you grow out this top, you could market it to the horse racing community as var"mitchel's triple crown"

Harvey, are you talking about the center hard and inedible part? The flesh is perfect, soft and juicy without being tough or stringy. Of course the longer you let them ripen on the plant the softer and sweeter they get. This is probably why commercial fruit is always shipped about half green. Just enough sweet flavor to sell at market and still tough enough to package and ship.

Good one Bob! I doubt the next gen fruits will do the same but you never can tell.

Yes, I've been told that it is quite edible with the Sugarloaf variety. I have even eaten it a little on store-bought pineapple, but it is too bitter to enjoy.

I think I may have been misleading in my previous post. The center part is NOT edible. It's hard and fibrous. The flesh on the other hand is as I described, but this is just what I have experienced growing it in my own backyard. I think you got it but I just want to make it clear to everyone else reading this.

Thanks, Mitchel. I remember seeing your plants last December and don't remember any signs of fruit then. How long did it take for this fruit to develop? I'm just wondering what my odds of getting mine to fruit and mature next year. Mine are in 1 gallon pots now and I'll be moving them into the greenhouse soon and probably repot them into 5 gallon pots. Your beatiful fruit provides me with a new incentive!

This was a ratoon crop so it didn't take as long as the first crop. I think it was about 4 or 5 months from flower to ripe fruit.
