tasty pineapples for zone 9?

What tasty pineapples are known to survive outdoors in zone 9 or colder? Thanks!

Richard, I don't know of any pineapples that will produce well where they get frosts. They like hot sunny locations, the same as bananas. If they do produce in cooler climates, the fruit quality and sweetness is usually hindered. Sugarloaf, Pernambuco, Natal Queen, are all tasty sweet varieties.

The good point is that they are easy to cover with a frost blanket if you're frosts are infrequent. I believe all pines have about the same cold sensitivity.

Richard, I'm trying sugarloaf. They may stay in pots and just go outdoors in the warm weather, I haven't figured that out yet. I have 4 small ones in gallon pots for now. Friends from Hawaii and Puerto Rico tell me they like these the best. They are poor shippers so we never see them here.

I grow the Pineapple tops from the grocery store in pots on my front porch. They get morning sun. It takes about 3 years for the plants to produce fruit. The pineapples are small but very tasty.

I retrieved my orchids and pineapple from "plant sitting" at Cal Orchid Farm today ... and the Sugarloaf is in bloom!

Your fruit is far away from being ready. Similar to banana fruit bunches it takes about 6 month here in San Diego for it to plump up and ripen.
However, once harvested, pineapple fruits will not ripen any further that's why you want to harvest a pineapple at its peak but early enough before critters like opossums or rats will get them.
Signs to look for: eyelets should be relatively even and big. The fruit itself changes color to yellow from bottom to top. The more yellow the better, I usually wait until 1/3 to half of the fruit has turned yellow. The yellowing on a white fleshed Sugarloaf compared to a store bought pineapple looks different though. Only the center of each eyelet will be yellowish.
