3 of my 'Royal Hawaiian' pines are in fruit now, they are white fleshed, and I believe pretty much the same as a Kona Sugarloaf. I harvested one around 3 years ago, can't remember much, but my wife says it was better than my smooth cayennes. I bet you'll enjoy it! This'll be my best year for them, with about 6 varieties in fruit right now.

That's one healthy pineapple plant. Whatever you are doing, keep doing it. Won't be long now.

So that IS a pineapple plant next to the beautiful potted vine sitting on your new beautiful patio!! It's all beautiful!! I need to read up on pineapple growing. I didn't know that they had pups! I thought you only got the next plant from the top of the fruit. I love the fruit and just ordered a sugarloaf plant. I'm waiting for it to arrive.

Re: Sugarloaf Pineapple

So how fast will they grow, how long to get fruit from those slips?
It doesn't look like the Sugarloaf have to be too big before fruiting.

I'd love to grow some, but they'd have to come in during the winter... be grown in pots.
Do you think that's do-able?

Re: Sugarloaf Pineapple

I have several growing outdoors in pots -- no complaints with adventures to 35 F degrees for a few hours of many nights in January. Indoors, the starts I received last week are growing vigorously under grow lights.

I just wish that they could be grown here in hell.

NM!! Thats great! I know you are south of me. I had some pineapples in the ground and this years late freeze kills back all the new growth. I love my smooth cayennes, Elite Gold's, my pernambuco is the only one that looks like it is doing well, and my Tri Color is getting a little of the pink back but no new growth yet.

I just got 3 Sugar Loaf's that were TC'ed, they look very differnt from yours. I love how wide the leafs are on a few of yours. Want to drop off a few of them potted sugar loaf's? I would love a few more, I have not had a pineapple fruit for me yet.

Edit: Hey Nanaman, do you have a pic of a mature Sugarloaf fruit? To me Sugar Loaf's all seem to look real ulgy. How do they look right before or after you pick them?

I got it from Wellspring Gardens. Last I knew it would be a few more months before he had them again, I want to pick up at least 4 more.

Scot,
Here's some irony for you. The vast majority of orders I receive at my internet site are for cactus fertilizer -- and if that weren't enough, the majority of these orders are from people in the northeastern U.S. :ha:

Re: Sugarloaf Pineapple

Is a #5 pot large enough for a suglarloaf to grow in and produce fruit? I plan to keep mine potted since it usually gets below 30F on some days in winter. I'd rather make pineapple sherbet other than by freezing my plants! ;)
