![]() I've never really been able to find a good list of all the sugarcane varieties online, but I bet we could do it! Simply put, unfortunately, there are tons of varieties of cane, and this makes it hard, since most growers just label cane with a color. We could also turn it into a sugarcane identification forum, especially for us "grocery store growers." Please comment below some varieties, and I'll try and add them in as soon as I can. I think we can organize it by color, but I don't know, suggestions would be appreciated. To view pictures from here, go to this link: Banana Gallery - Kbud: Sugarcane Varieties
Thanks, Kbud Sugarcane Varieties Green Sugarcane - a common type of cane Red Sugarcane - in my opinion, the prettiest varieties of sugarcane are red. Though they have thinner, more elongated stalks, they still have plenty of the sweet juice in 'em! Often an ornamental variety due to the beautiful stem and foliage. Red Stripe Yellow Sugarcane - another common variety of cane, the yellow stems make these varieties stand out. Yellow Gal Super Vietnamese Yellow - a variety that can grow huge; my source told me the plant is still growing at 5 years old. Black-Stemmed Sugarcane - closest to the commercial varieties, black-stemmed sugarcane has green foliage and dark stems, lending itself to a very noticeable contrast. Beware, these can be especially spiky. Black Skin Other/Variegated - some varieties may fit into both a different color and this category for beautiful variegated stems, etc. also in the section of their dominant color. Red Stripe Bamboo Sugarcane A quick note: on one of the websites I visited, I learned sugarcane is also categorized commercially into "chewing cane," "syrup cane" and another group. The are arranged by their use - chewing cane is used mainly for eating, syrup cane for sugar because it crystallizes really well, etc. For the non-commercial grower's sake, I'll classify it by color. I really don't hold much by their uses, I feel they all will probably work for all the applications. ![]() ![]()

![]() Pretty much what I know are the "super sweet" ones I see on ebay, the commercial yellow and green types, some really fascinating ones I've seen posted from a club meeting in Hawaii, and some heirloom types I've also seen on eBay. The heirloom types were developed and used in southern US, so personally I favor those more, as their history seems better suited to my unheated greenhouse growing than more tropical Hawaiian varieties, which, I've yet to see for sale online anyway. Some are super cool though!

![]() Okay, I'm sort of giving up on this thread. I found a link of a complete list and had it translated from Haitian. I will post it below. Apparently, quoting from the source that led me to the source:
"It is rather difficult to find someone to help identify a variety of sugarcane. That's why it is so important to keep up with the name to begin with. But obviously, not every one is interested in names so identities become lost frequently. Names are useful to help keep track of characteristics of a variety. I've tried for about 3 years to have an old heirloom green chewing cane identified with no success yet. It may be so old that no one living knows its original name. Some varieties are renamed in different growing areas or countries. Often the new name is a translation to the country's language but sometimes not. Many varieties have been around for centuries, however these are becoming extinct because of breeding and selection of new varities by researchers in the last hundred years or so. There are perhaps 10's of thousands of hybrid varieties in existence now and many thousands are bred--though not selected--each year. So maybe this can give you some idea why even a sugarcane 'expert' wouldn't want to try to tackle identifying a variety ! People who know old named sugarcane varieties are ,too, sadly becoming extinct along with the varieties. The best available information that I know of on the web would be the ARS-GRIN website which lists over 1000 varieties with some descriptions of most of those varieties.Use the link and scroll down to Saccharum officinarum and click on it for variety lists and links to descriptions. So good luck on identifying varieties !" The link to the post, you may find it interesting: Heirloom Sugarcane Varieties - Heirloom Plants & Gardens Forum - GardenWeb The original thread starter states: There are numerous sugarcane varieties that have been used for chewing,juice,candy-making,syrup production and sugar production. Many of these varieties have either become extinct or rare due to several factors. The commercial sugar growers are only interested in varieties that produce more sugar per acre, therefore ALL of the breeding programs look for better disease resistance, higher yield and more sugar. Therefore, heirlooms are often ignored and not preserved for their particular qualities for future generations. Also new varieties from government breeding programs which may have merit for chewing, syrupmaking or ornamental value wind up being destroyed. Several heirlooms exist for chewing, some of which can be peeled easily with the fingernails, for example ! Others have colorful, ornamental leaves and/or stalks--like Pele's Smoke which has pretty purple foilage. Striped Ribbon cane used for chewing and syrup has pretty stripes in the stalk.Old heirloom varieties include : Home Green,White Transparent,Green German,Ribbon,Louisiana Purple,Kokea,Cayana, and POJ to name a few. The only 2 major variety collections in the U.S. are in Miami,FL and Houma,LA. Hawaii has a nice collection, but restrictions won't allow "importation" to the mainland ! But,sadly these collections are dwindling also due primarily to lack of interest and lack of funding. A few Botanical Gardens may have a few varieties, also. I'm wondering if gardeners have some heirloom sugarcanes in their garden and would be interested in preserving them for the future . Anyone out there interested ? Here's the complete list - I suddenly realized it would be pretty much impossible to identify an everyday variety, and I am being lazy and copying and pasting the list from this link: Results of your search: MIA Saccharum officinarum This is the list: 748 accessions in the Green Database CANE 5 Louisiana purple CANE 105 Spaansch CANE 228 Badila CANE 768 Bamboo Morada CANE 838 Hawaiian Original 52 CANE 850 Tahiti 3 CANE 7475 Manjav CANE 7498 NG 96 024 (12-95) CANE 8275 S. officinarum CANE 8384 S.
