Sugar Cane Starts??

Is it possible to use the sugar cane pieces sold in the grocery store to root new plants for the garden? They are vacuum packed and found in the produce refrigerated section.

If you're talking about the ones I think you are, they've been skinned and you can't use them for starts. These things are white lumps of cane, no?

No. They're brownish, and look intact. The inside is clearly different than the outside. It looks like a solid chunk of bamboo with no air pockets inside. Like a corn stalk. The outside has not been stripped off of the cane.

Does that sound promising?

I'd give it a shot. If it doesn't work, the worst is that you're out a couple of bucks.

I don't think it will work, but like lorax, said it's worth a try!:baloonnaner:

I've always wondered how do you harvest sugar cane?

When they harvest the stuff here - they just hack it off with a machete. It might grow roots - worth trying!

here they have fields and fields....like corn.....then when its mature they put signs and they turn the whole place on fire....burning the leaves and only leaving the stalk :D it can be rooted that way but never seen sugarcanes at a grocery store :P interesting though just try it and see if it roots :D
