Re: Succulents & Cacti...
I know I'm happy if the plant isn't, Cam!
Looks so much better now. Gonna do our white ones tomorrow too. The same can be done to polish spotted orchid leaves also! : ) |

Re: Succulents & Cacti...
Thanks for the nice comments and I love that wreath idea!! I might also try to make one! Im sure it would also make a good centerpiece for a table outside in the summer if you cant find a door making it good indoors or out! You can buy them premade, but they seem to go for up to 100 dollars for live ones!!

Re: Succulents & Cacti...
Here's a couple of websites with instructions on how to make your own (be sure scroll down on the first link and view that brilliantly colored one - the 3rd one).
You could try this in a smaller version for candle rings or wine glass rings. And a straight version for a table centerpiece. Living Wreath – How to make a living wreath with succulents - A Storybook Life Succulent Wreath ~JaNan

Re: Succulents & Cacti...
The colors of those succulents on those wreaths Janan is making me desperately wish I had some of them! Wow, I could easily get addicted to those things and think I already am! Did you see how red and purple some of those cuttings were?!!!
I want them all! A very creative and fantastic idea! Thanks so much for sharing with all of us...and if you ever get some of those brightly colored sedums, please be sure to share them too! : ) |

Re: Succulents & Cacti...
Hi Sherry and everyone. I wanted to post a picture of my possible success with pollinating Thanksgiving cactus seeds. I thought they were sterile until I read an article. Where the flower and the stem meets its really swollen and still green on the dead flowers. I think these got pollinated successfully. The ones I didnt pollinate where the flower and stem meet, that area is shriveled and isnt green. I think they produce a "fruit" which is the seed pod called an apple. I think the seeds are ready when the pod turns red. The first 2 pictures are the possible successful ones
This one is the one that may just fall off |

Re: Succulents & Cacti...
Very cool, Cameron!!!
I love experimenting with hand-pollination and have had success many times. I guess you'll know very soon if it worked, because the pod will either swell, or fall off! Good luck and please let us know how it works out for ya... : ) |

Re: Succulents & Cacti...
Thanks Sherry I'll keep everyone updated. When the seed pod turns red, that will mean that I was successful

Re: Succulents & Cacti...
That is very interesting. How did you do it Cameron, with a paint brush? One flower to another on the same plant or what? I still have some blooming maybe I can try it too if you can tell me how. I have wondered why I never see seed pods on them but we do have them inside so the natural pollinators can't get to them, DUH! (a slap on the forehead moment!!!)

Re: Succulents & Cacti...
Hi Janan. I did both. I mainly cross pollinated but one i used the same plant. I just coated the purple stamen with pollen and i think it takes a year for the pod to ripen. It turns red. I'll have to see if any stay on, which im hoping. I still have plenty of flowers to experiment with.

Re: Succulents & Cacti...
Oh most of the flowers I just rubbed together to get most of the pollen off. I used a paintbrush but the pollen wasnt sticking to the purple stamen too well

Re: Succulents & Cacti...
If you'll notice too Janan, with Thanksgiving cacti, the pollen is everywhere...you just have to handle one in full bloom to see it falling from the flowers. It is even sufficient to just tap the bloom over top of another bloom and then vice versa...making sure the pollen falls on the stamens.
You'll know if it works when the bud begins to swell. Never known any pod to take a year to mature but if they say so, then maybe it's true. I did the same thing to my African Violets and had total success, but I used a soft paintbrush to bring pollen from one bloom to the other. Good luck, Cam & Janan! : ) |

Re: Succulents & Cacti...
A couple shots I took tonight...
Roger Meyer Dragon fruit cutting: Here's your white cactus blooming tonight, Cam... The buds would fall off in the mail so I thought I'd enjoy them before I send it off to ya. I have one for me as well and it looks like it will bloom tomorrow...a few buds, anyway. : ) |
