Re: STRAWBERRY Grower's Thread...
It looks like this. Although I'm not sure of the exact species. I hope they are edible. Or else I'm going to have to buy some plants after seeing this thread lol. Er. I'm not going to eat them. I grew some real ones two years ago and after seeing all those earwigs climb all over, I don't think I want to. Heheh.
Duchesnea indica A [Public domain], by Wouter Hagens (Own work), from Wikimedia Commons I tried transplanting the real strawberries I had into the North Side. It's like a 4 ft wide strip between the house and a cinder block wall and barely gets any sunlight. Those strawberry plants ended up dying last year. But I have the wild type doing just fine right now in that area. Last edited by musaboru : 03-29-2011 at 09:06 PM. |

Re: STRAWBERRY Grower's Thread...
Dar, I had to check because they look so tasty! Wikipedia has this to say:
The mock strawberry or "Gurbir", Potentilla indica (formerly Duchesnea indica), also called Indian strawberry or false strawberry, has foliage and fruit similar to true strawberry, though it is not in the genus Fragaria. It can readily be distinguished by its yellow flowers, as opposed to the flowers of true strawberries which are white or slightly pink. It is native to eastern and southern Asia, but has been introduced to many other areas as an ornamental plant. It has been naturalized in many regions, including the southern United States, and is considered a noxious weed in some regions. The leaves are trifoliate, roughly veined beneath, dark green, and often persisting through the winter, arising from short crowns. The plant spreads along creeping stolons, rooting and producing crowns at each node. The yellow flowers are produced in mid spring, then sporadically throughout the growing season. The fruits are white or red, and entirely coverered with red seeds. They are edible, though unpleasant to eat, as they have no discernable taste. ~JaNan

Re: STRAWBERRY Grower's Thread...
Looking good, Brian!
Greg, the seeds will be found on the outside of the berries when they are ripe. You can share runners with people also, as they will root into new plants. : ) |

Re: STRAWBERRY Grower's Thread...
That sure is a LOVE-ly strawberry (pun intended )
I want to get those white ones with the red seeds too! They say on the white pine strawberries the seeds aren't true so you have to get plants. I love having strawberries in hanging baskets. Boy, the birds sure do love them though! ~J

Re: STRAWBERRY Grower's Thread...
LoL JaNan!
I use netting to keep the birds away. I also thought these ones I had recently, "Florida Star", were very tasty and large so I saved the seeds... An excellent way to remove small seeds off of whole strawberries, is with a pair of tweezers...which we all know you men will have. : ) |

Re: STRAWBERRY Grower's Thread...
YUMMY! Those look really good.
Sherry, did you notice that those variegated ones are alpine? We went somewhere recently that had strawberries the size of my palm. I thought they looked so good! I got three of them. (oink, oink) But I cut into one and YukkO!!! They were so sour and awful! In fact they weren't even ripe - they were red on the outside and mostly white on the inside! I was very disappointed. I tried all three just in case one was good too! ~J

Re: STRAWBERRY Grower's Thread...
If there's one thing I hate JaNan, it's that...red on the outside but white on the inside!
Gross! No I didn't notice if those variegated ones were Alpine! Now I want them even more. Later, perhaps you can send me a little baby, sprouting off your mother plant. When will you get your plants, you guys? Bet you're super excited!!! : ) |

Re: STRAWBERRY Grower's Thread...
Yes, I can do that. Do they ship easily?
I am supposed to get mine next week. Shipping was high - $18 - I know it sure can't be from the size of the box or the weight of the plant! Ouch! But I wanted it very, very badly!

Re: STRAWBERRY Grower's Thread...
Yup, they ship terrifically!
I even sent someone a seedling I sprouted myself to the States and it grew like crazy when the person received it! It was amazing. A passiflora seedling too. I knew as soon as I saw Greg's link, you would love them, JaNan. They are very beautiful indeed. I wonder what color the blossoms will be. The fruits should be utterly delicious, being it's an Alpine. Very cool! : ) |

Re: STRAWBERRY Grower's Thread...
Yeah that is the other one I want to get. It looks fake it is so pretty!
I was talking to my sister this morning and she said she had picked up two strawberry plants from Home Depot. She said they were tagged as the same kind of strawberry but one had white blooms and the other had pink. I asked her if she would save me some seeds of the pink bloom and she asked me how she would do that and I told her with tweezers. She laughed and said yeah, I am really going to do that! Sooooo.......... I may have to just get a stawberry from her. Geez! What's the name of the pink blossom, do you know?
