This web page stimulated my thinking..
What I noticed was the attention to detail. So many how to's I read just more or less state the quick over view of a process.
Example seed scaring that helps to shorten gemination time in soil. My latest example would be some Meyers lemon seeds I started. I took 40 seeds 20 unscared, 20 scared in 10 days the scared seeds started breaking through the soil 16 of the scared seeds germinated.
The unscared seed came up erratically at about 19 days, some of them waiting for germinating up to 40 days into the process. I'm thinking a lot of folks would simply forget them after a month. 14 had germinated after 60 days.
The scared seeds pretty much all looked healthy and very little short or small seedlings. The unscared seeds produced some small seedlings and because they grew/germinated at different lengths of time were a bit harder to get a good visual result. Meaning without the uniform germination l could not tell the quality of the seedling growth . some were tall some were small!
So ... We all learn or have known soaking and scaring have an advantage in allowing better germination rates. My little experiment showed me the difference on a "hard shelled seed" is huge!
I know in the back of a lot of peoples minds you'll be thinking! Seeds! You don't grow citrus from seeds! It takes forever to get fruit. And you don't know the out come of the fruit because of genetic diversity! :-)
To you guys I say ... Its from this simple genitic diversity that new tasty/different fruits can be produced without any genitic research lab. Yes truly old school! And yes you simply plant them and wait for fruit to show up. One trick I've learned over the years is "fertilizer" yes you apply it on a regular time schedule. Cow chips tree cuttings, chicken droppings, citrus pulp, feed the soil and the tree benefits.
I have given the seedlings to people who (I hope) will care for them. A nice big pot on a porch will look pretty darn good with a mini citrus tree blooming!
They are pretty and smell good!


These two lemons are from my un-scared group. the difference in size is huge plus one has no leaves!

I've always wondered how long the veggie seeds I bought were viable
That link states that for the most part its several years
I learned this 1st hand last year when I planted old seeds that were given to me
Some of the seeds dated back to 2004 & still germinated....with a high germination rate
I only had one pack of seeds that did not germinate at all

I've changed my seed buying habits & now keep seeds from one year to the next
This allows me to diversify more & have more varieties of veggies then before
I've started about 100 Red Bud trees from seeds, using the scarify method
I had planned on buying more 2-3' trees, but might as well grow them if I can

A****aba Im going to juice it and eat it. It tastes sorta like slightly bitter celery rite off the plant. It has the ability to produce B12.. My friend was in Japan he returned and sent me one pound of the leaves. and a few seeds. I also got some seeds from John Kohler {growing your greens) But its very slow growing and the small seedlings are whimpy! two years to adult and its NOT suppose to do excellent in hot weather .. But Ill try any way!
