Re: Red Lady Papaya
Since its been indoors I'm sure it not as good as if it had been outside getting fat like all the one's I knocked off.. I added a lil sugar.. and this was after I test tasted it to make sure it wasn't over-ripe like my previous one's.. It was good.. :^)

No, they are sitting in a Plumeria's pot in the Sun room.. That way they are elevated from the floor, staying warmer, and get some good sun during the day.. :^)

Re: Red Lady Papaya
I was in Texas this week to visit family.. Wile there in a grocery store I see some papaya. Small ones but I figured OK get one so I can have some good stuff in the AM. WAMMO this was so sweet and dark orange. Darker than any I grow and larger than X77. So I put the seeds in my suit case. Oh yes I went back just to be sure it wasn’t a fluke bought 3 more all were great. I got them planted in a tray :-) in the back yard! I did it as I walked in .. My wife said Gee its nice you came home. Now I’m waiting till next season to try some of these Papayas home grown. In my Papaya patch. Truly the best tasting I have ever eaten.. ha ha ha .. This hobby/obsesion is too good at times

Re: Red Lady Papaya
Wow that one on the bottom looks like its saying ..
OUT OF MY WAY! I AM MAKING FRUIT! I planted 20 groups of 3 from my Texas seeds :-) almost all have germinated. Dont know how many I can plant with out getting those stares o_o from my new neighbors. But I'm breaking them in slowly. Because I got GAC vines started also. So he will see my most beautiful Banana plants then a nice Mango tree some Papaya then a fence full of GAC if all goes well...... Now back on topic! I know you will update with pics of that papaya so Im in for the journey!

Now to just convince my mum to "visit" with someone who has a tree...

Re: Red Lady Papaya
All this talk of Red Lady made me break down and buy a potted RL from Lowes. It definitely had single narrow flowers at the axils indicating it's a hermie. Planted it nearby the only yellow maridol that sprouted from 8 seeds planted in a 12 inch circle. No flowers on that one yet. I'm gonna get some fruit this year at least!

Re: Red Lady Papaya
Great on your bloom! Mr. Cocoa thinks I'm nuts because I am not a "tropical growing area native" but I swear I'm getting nearly as good spotting papayas as I am spying figs at 500 paces or more. (Short bananas and cannas can still fool me from a distance.)
His landlady had one that she didn't plant which was bearing fruit; she hates them so it's been chopped down. Shame but I do understand; the plant is beautiful but I'm not a fan of the fruit either. I wish I could love it; I don't.

Re: Red Lady Papaya
most people are turned off by the smell of the seeds. the fruit itself taste great to me depending on how sweet. i usually use it as a filler for drinks along with other more tart/flavorful fruits and then a splash of milk.

Re: Red Lady Papaya
Paps don't need space. Just a small area of ground and then they rise above everybody else. I have both about 5 ft from each other with 2 VC mats in between. Leaves have very long petioles and let in plenty of sun.
I just have to doge the stems and leaves when passing by on the lawn tractor. |
