![]() Was actually looking into container growing potatoes before you asked.
Reached the top of the containers with the soil. Black one is a 18 Gallon, 19" diameter x 16" deep (inside dimensions), yellow one is 23 Gallon, 20" diameter x 18" deep (inside dimensions). ![]() DM |

![]() Potatoes in straw DOES work quite well.
Any tater will do . Have done reds and fingerlings with success . Low maintenance also. Good yield for limited spaces. |

![]() I have lots of 50# chicken/horse/dog feed bags. Roll them down about 3/4 add soil and compost plus about 4 seedling potatoes per bag. Once the seedlings are about 8" tall, I roll up some more bag and add more soil, repeat a few more times until the bag is all filled up. I will then just leave it alone other than watering it occasionally. After the top green has died, just split up the bag with a knife or scissors and start harvesting your potatoes.

![]() If I had the bags available, I would have went that route. I found that with the tall containers and winter sun lower on the horizon I had to tip the containers at an angle to get the sun light towards the bottom. Then also had to rotate them every few days to keep things equal.

![]() My sister-inlaw used to grow potatoes in old tires....she placed the first tire on the ground, filled it with soil and planted the potatoes. As the plants grew she would add another tire and more soil to build it up around the plant. By the time she had added her third or fourth tire the plants had reached maturity and were dying back. At harvest time she would simply remove the tires and pick out the potatoes - no more back-breaking job stooped over a shovel or pitch fork. No chance of accidently piercing the potatoes with the tines.

![]() Looks good!!!
![]() Keep your eye out for the Colorado potato beetle. No matter where a potato is planted these beetles seem to travel from Colorado to your garden . ![]() |

![]() Yay!! I'm starting to get blooms on my taters too!
My cousin told me he's raising his potatoes in barrels. He cut a door in the side, so he could access the potatoes. He planted them in the bottom and has added dirt to it as the plant got taller until they are at the very top of the barrel. I imagine he's going to have a LOT of potatoes in there! |
