Plain aloe vera

how cold tolerant are these normal aloe vera, this site says -8 C' in dry state.

our winters here are about -3 C, -4 C average and sometimes the day temps raise higher then 0 C.
at some times the night temps can go far as -10 C but this is rare.
can i overwinter aloe vera in an unheated greenhouse ?

i like them soooo much for their medicinal properties , i worship them 1 minute each day!

i know that the aloes i have are not cold tolorant. i had 2 die when they were out side this past year.anything below i believe it was 50*f, killed mine. then they got all brown and muchy. so i would bring them in this winter if i were you.

Lodewijk, they wont survive here.
maybe they are hardy till -2 but not more, maybe they regrow back from their roots after -6 but i dont know that.

there must be some aloe species that would thrive in cold or wet conditions.

im going to order alot of aloe plants and test them this winter

I always bring my aloe in if the temps are gonna drop below 40 degrees.

They do fine in my part of zone 8 (northern) . I dug a lot up at a friends house this year . He had a few in bloom this spring .

No . But they are right up against his shed and he put a lot of pine straw around them . I'm not sure if he covered them .I'l ask later.
It was early spring when I saw the ones in bloom there and they were pretty big then . He started out with one plant and they spread 6' to cover the lil' bed .

If you decide to use the plant pulp as salve or juice: You want the innermost flesh of the plant. The yellow latex near the outer skin is a toxin. Long term use is associated with kidney failure, arrhythmia, and intestinal paralysis. Beware of unscrupulous manufacturers who use the whole plant to make their "Aloe Juice".

I don't think the aloe family like cold, and like cold and wet even less. If you could shelter them from the cold and keep them bone dry, there is just a chance they might survive - but I would be surprised if they would survive outdoors in Holland or the UK.

here in the frontyard of a house in the street was also a aloe.
it was not the aloe vera but another, smaller aloe, it died back to the ground but in spring it had lots of new pups. there are some hardy (-8) aloe's but I don'tknow what their names are.

Yes Daen - there are some that grow high in the mountains where it gets very cold, but I think very dry winters.

i have seen a show were they visit highlands in afrika, there were even aloes growing their at temperatures of -4C wet and without protection !!!!

so there are alot of those aloes ,they are probably protected by law i guess.

Lodewijkp - perhaps these links will help. If those aloes in africa in winter were wet - the drainage must have been fierce.

Here I keep mine indoors as outside is too wet and humid - indoors only needs watering every 2 months or so, and quite happy! Today is cool and dry at 30c and 75% humidity.

Haha Daen! Often in July it gets to 38c and 95% humidity - toooo hot and steamy.
