Just ordered a Sugarloaf & Gold Elite from Hirts Tropical.. Hopefully see if they are something different than what I have to round me out. :^)

I see Agri-starts has a new one Called.. Ananas comosus 'Sweet Stripes' these are its characteristics:

Variegated pineapple
Incredibly ornamental
Sweet edible fruit

For all you wondering its a Variegated Sugarloaf.. :^)

Unfortunately I don't have a pic of the better tree, which was a bit more full. On this one there is a significant amount of space between leaves and fruit so they don't look as much like pineapples but still pretty neat. Anyone know what it is?

good luck
I will have to by sandy soil to add to my crappy clay soil. I swear no matter how much we mulch and add soil the clay comes to the top. So now out of the ground and into pots.

And here in FL no matter how much compost you add, the sand rises. Pineapples seems to do fine in the mess; most plants stay puny and don't grow well for many folks.

I remember clay--white throwable stuff. I amended annually with truckloads of leaf mould/mulch which was never stirred or shaken for more than 10 years before I could step down to a biennial program for the most part. After over 25 years, I had 20" of black gold! I suspect the same could happen here but everyone tells me I'm wrong. These are the same people who tell me FL has 2 distinct growing seasons requiring "cool" and "warm" plants but they plant kale, cabbage and broccoli seeds in March that just get going by June when it's beginning to get hotter than Hades--HELLO?

thanks a lot.. yeah, i planted the bottom one last year but i don't know what variety it is. the fruit sure is puny though. hopefully it will beef up a little before it's time to harvest.

oh, and the variegated is definitely a freak! i've never had this many suckers on a single plant. i really have no idea how i'm going to separate them with all of the spines, but a bunch of my neighbors have already asked me for starts.

good luck with yours--they are awesome to look at.

Thanks.. Did you feed yours Azomite? Mine pup like crazy on that stuff, but not 13 crazy, maybe half that..
Hey, neighbor that sure is pretty you have spare? lol heard that before..

I fed mine the same as I fed my banana's and the plants got pretty big last year.. I don't think cayenne cares how big it is it pops when it feels like it, but Pineapple tops like being bigger, how big who knows.. Hopefully one of my 3 flower so I can get a general size indicator.. :^)
