Default Pineapple troubles?

Finally found a fruit that had some healthy growing leaves in the store. Removed the top and right away revealed a root. Placed the bottom in a cup with water. Have had it sitting on a window sill that gets a lot of sun. Looked at it today and the center new leaves browned and pull right out. Is the plant dead?

I just put the tops into the fast drain potting soil right away. The roots are already there and I have several growing now for a couple of years.

Water as you would any bromeliad.

from my experience, when the leaves start falling out of the center the rot has already taken over. best bet is to go direct to potting soil. you really don't need much water at all

Leaves got burnt from the sun and then dried out. So removed from the window and placed on the counter. So just like any plant that's why they pulled out easy. I trimmed the stem down too where the root knobs show. Yes I change the water often. All of the tops I see at the stores all have dead centers on them. This one was actively growing so hopefully it pulls through. Thanks guys!
