What should I do with this pup? Leave it where it is or remove and pot it or re-plant it somewhere else?

I'd leave it alone. The good news is that you will get fruit off of that pup a year from now.

After the mother plant fruits that's it. What I do is go to the supermarket and I get all the free pineapple tops I want. At the market they clean the pinapples and throw away all the uneatable parts, so they are glad to give the crowns away. I unscrew the remaining top and pull off a few of the bottom leaves to reveal the roots. I then push the plant into the ground and within 2.5 to 3 years I get fruit. Some people say starting them in water helps give the roots a head start but it doesnt seem to make a difference - at least here in south florida. The main plant or "crown" will fruit and die just like a banana and the next to fruit will be one of the suckers. For some reason the suckers fruit more quickly than the original crown.

Wow! I have only tried to grow pineapples a couple of times. I didn't know they would pup! Great. Another thing I have to start growing. :2761:

I like to let any suckers , growing off of the mother plant, continue to grow. I swear she nurses em like a baby ! And left attatched, they seem to produce fruit quicker. Depending on the variety and growing conditions, some will sucker like crazy, while others will kick out only a few. My Natal Queens sucker like crazy. Some varieties produce slips, ( basicaly suckers growing off of the main stalk, either above or below the fruit) these are what I seperate and plant to produce more mother plants. Acording to the pdf file I was reading the other day, the biggest and best quality fruit are produced by the crown first, then the slips, and finally the suckers. But the suckers produce fruit quickest, followed by the slips, and finally the crowns. It seems like in no time , I had plenty of plants growing, in different stages, and I started with only three plants. I can't wait to try other varieties, just need more room!:08: :08: :08:

Pineapples are pretty hardy. I remember my dad had one in his yard in CT when I was a child. He left it in the ground until early december before it finally secumbed to the cold.

I learned mowing them down with the riding lawnmower seems to induce pups in a Dole gold pineapple.... I ran right over it, thought it was dead, and it put up three pups instead. So if you want to propagate them, plant it in the ground and hit it with the John Deere....ha ha ha

Speaking of pineapples, can anyone help ID these?

I got them at a local nursery about two years ago, they all came from one clump that I divided up the other day.
