Photos of Casimiroa sapota, aka Matazano?
I'm looking for photos of Casimiroa sapota, The Sapote Tree. Also referred to as Matasano in some countries -- along with other plants. It is cultivated in Nicaragua. Thanks!

Re: Photos of Casimiroa sapota, aka Matazano?
The Fruit and Spice Park I think grows this. They grow a couple Sapote from what I recall. I had some photos of their Sapote, not sure if its the exact one you need. I don't know at the moment what drive or memory stick these pictures are on... I can't locate them at a quick glance. I had Sapote growing here but when my dog was a puppy she trampled it, snapping it at the base. Mine was shipped to me from Puerto Rico. Anyway it was Mamey.
I would give the curator a ring at the Fruit and Spice Park - Friends of the Fruit & Spice Park - Contact

Mayas autenticos At the bottom left side of the page, click on the flora hyperlink under naturaliza. It will take you to a page named Plantas de Guatemala, then click on the words Arboles Frutales (fruit trees). It will take you to a page name Arboles Frutales de Guatemala. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page. You will there find Matasana, Sapote Casimoroa tetrameria. Its hard to find. It shows both the fruit and the tree. I can't provide a direct link to the photos because all pages copy to the same address, so hope this helps. NanaNut2

Re: Photos of Casimiroa sapota, aka Matazano?
If you are growing this plant (Casimiroa sapota), I would sure like a picture of it! I have searched articles, books, and the internet for several years, but only to find one imprint of a dried leaf collection. In 1987 it was reported to be cultivated in Nicaragua.
This species has been described without photos by: David Fairchild in papers of the Fairchild Tropical Garden, Julia Morton in Fruits of Warmer Climates, Elbert Little et al in Common trees of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, and Franklin Martin et al in Perennial Edible Fruits of the Tropics. Thanks!

Hey Richard...
My Dad is growing one in Camarillo, CA..near Ventura. I'll ask him to get a pic, but it may take a while before he gets it posted. Margie |

Re: Photos of Casimiroa sapota, aka Matazano?
Having consulted with a few more researchers, there is only one 1st hand accounting of Casimiroa sapota. The description and photo plate are identical to Casimiroa edulis. All other mentions of Casimiroa sapota can be traced back to the original source. I believe it is a synonym of Casimiroa edulis.
Case closed!
