Peruvian Sage (Salvia discolor)
Two years ago I planted a Peruvian Sage (Salvia discolor) in a planter in the front yard. It's behaving like this is the best winter ever
 In the first photo below is the plant -- about 3 feet high and bursting with new growth. For contrast, checkout the fallen maple leaves in and around the plant. The second photo is a close up of the unusual flowers. They are such a dark shade of purple that they appear black from more than a few feet away. Also notice how they hang from the stems which is different than the inflorescences of most Salvias.
