I've been told it is just one of those hybrids that won't flower . Some have had it for 6 years and no buds.

OK you passion flower gurus, I saw this passion flower plant at the store and at first
passed it up, thought about it a while, and had to go back and buy it. I have no
idea what it might be, but I'm pretty sure it is not what it is marked as. The tags are
confusing. The one in the pot says 'Passiflora Edulis'

and the sticker on the pot says 'Passiflora Purp. E. Playboy' which makes me think it may
be a hybrid, or a specific P. edulis cultivar.

I don't think it is a straight P. edulis since if you look at the leaves, they are quite different.
P. edulis has leaves that resemble a 3-fingered mitten, while these are rather heart shaped.
They are also larger than the P. edulis I've seen.

The flower buds are not shaped like P. edulis

And the stems have these flares or wings (like the 'Winged Bean') that I don't see on my P. edulis.

So, I was wondering if even without any blooms yet, someone could give me an idea what it was.
I know I went overboard with the photos, but I wanted to give a complete idea how it looked.

After a carful examination of the photos, the number that pops up consistentently is 4, two pairs. The one with 3 looks like one was broken off. I even saw one photo that looked like it may have had 5; two pairs and a 5th small bump that may or may not have been on of those glands. Do any of the ones you mentioned have those 'wings' on the stem?

I wonder how someone would mistake this for P. edulis? I'm not an expert, but it was obviously different. The leaves alone were a dead giveaway.

edit - I went back home and checked it out - it typically has 4 on each petiole. Thanks for the info, now I know of something else to check for when I see passiflora.

I think this is P. alata. This is the one that had P. edulis on the tag, but also had Passiflora Purp E. Playboy on the label on the pot. I believe it it is P. alata based on the 'wings' on the stems, or maybe a hybrid because of that name 'Playboy'. Anyone know what distinguishes P. alata from P. decaisneana? Oh, another thing I noticed was that it has three open blooms, and all of them hang straight down. My P. edulis does not do that.
Passiflora alata (?)
