Papyrus!

I just thought about growing Papyrus (actually Lagniappe) gave me the idea! What i have to grow it in is a 4 foot square 300 gallon water tank-so if i put 6-8 inches of sandy/rocky soil on the bottom will this work for me and then just fill er' up with good ole' H20? (remember i live in Illinois)
P.S. Any good Papyrus sellers out there? Thanks Robby

Papyrus will grow in just about any warm, soggy place. The dwarf variety is worth considering. FYI, papyrus is very invasive.

...and you will have to bring it in for the winter. But I love it; I have the Giant and the dwarf forms in my pond.

It's also excellent for bioremediation of household greywater. That's why I grow it. That and to make paper from it.

Robby - it likes warm and damp but otherwise very easy about soil types - we grew it in sand in the middle east, and it doesn't require much fertilizer etc. Go for it!!!

Hey Robby, I happened to be downtown in the city today and saw a bunch of the Dwarf Papyrus, Cyperus alternifolius used as landscaping elements. I think they look nice in the shallow dish like planter and then elevated with a concrete pole of sort. They were part of the landscaping just outside Kuala Lumpur's main bus depot which is right in the centre of the city. Maybe you should plant it like this.

The Egyptian Papyrus, Cyperus papyrus is banned in the country as it can house a bug which can destroy the paddy or rice plants.

I grew the tall Egyptian papyrus alongside my pond few years ago. I loved it & collected seeds but they never germinated.
