Red face Need help

Ok, so I have this Aristolochia "dutchmans pipe vine" I can't find a name for, there is no aristolochia society, I have looked and looked and looked for the last year till I am out of ideas on how to search creatively. Anyone have an idea on who I might contact in this field or a direction to look?

Thanks for any thought or idea

If this link Flickr Search: Aristolochia doesn't work on your web browser go to flickr.com search for Aristolochia there are at least 100 photos.

flaflower,

OMG! U are in a pickle!!! there're hundreds of species... good pictures of habit, leaves, flowers & pods might help... also the characterising of odour of the flower & natural location of the collection.

Here's an idea: Stefan Wanke might still be an academic assistant at the Botanical Institute of the Dresden Tech U.

I think he did his Ph. D on Aristolochia evolution.

I dunno if this email will work: stefan.wanke@tu-dresden.de

Where'd ur plant come from?

As I have noticed in the past year or so...literally HUNDREDS, some are actually incredibly gorgeous! I got the seeds not a plant from a lady in Mexico on a trade, I got 2 plants going here from those seeds, my plants have yet to bloom so the only pic I have is a really 1/2 crummy pic she sent me of like 1/2 a flower (sigh) I recently contacted her and asked her if she could send me a few better flower pics and she said NO she is done with that plant and has moved on with her gardening adventures...so I didn't push it. I asked her if SHE might have gotten a proper name for it and she said no it was of no interest to her what name it might have, all she knew is that it was a native...but from past talks with her it's more like naive because we all know how things travel, it may not be a native at all.
I'll look for and post the one pic I have in this computer here somewhere.
Thanks for the E-mail I'll give it a shot and see if it is a working address...but i have to find that pic, or Dr. Wanke will send me a cock-eyed look back.
let me look for that little pic

Well, it's only partly opened; and it's fimbriate... fimbriata is a common enough species in the trade... You know it? It's New World but it doesn't get as far North as Central America...

The leaves are too blurred to make out detail... are the leaf veins lighter pigmented than the leaf lamina?

But there might be oodles of fimbriate-petaled Aristolochias 4 all I know!! Let's sleep on it!

Ok, I sent off an e-mail to this Gentleman, we will see if it bounces back with a bad address, weather he responds at all and ignores me or tells me to go pound salt...LOL
Thanks Shannon, it's worth a shot and better than I have had in the last year or so of frustration looking around like a blind bat in a round room.

Thanks again!!

It didn't dawn on me it was partly open it looked open to me, but I don't know this plant personally so I was unaware it may be somewhat or partly unopen, yes I know fimbriata I have one white veined fimbriata, the leaves are similar in a roundish fashion, but this one lacks the veining...please tell me I am not the only one who takes pics in the dark like I just did...LOL Here they are!

flaflower,

I'm as much in the dark as you are...it's just pure surmise on my part that the flower might be immature (and perhaps not typical; perhaps mutilated in some way?).

The leaf variegation on fimbriata is not characteristic of all accessions. I personally think that most of the fimbriata in the trade is just of a narrow accession, selected for ornamental value, ease of propagation & frequent, easy flowering.

There is a 2013 paper on the use of A. fimbriata as a model organism (like fruit flies & mice) the lead author is Barbara Bliss of Penn State, her email (on the paper) is bjbliss@gmail.com ...so that might help...

I remember that there was an Aristolochia expert in the International Aroid Society he died a couple of years ago though...maybe there are yet others there??... the IAS is Florida based.

I've only grown about six or so Aristolochia species; mostly stuff from the wild; and the ones I'm most familiar with are grandiflora, rugosa and trilobata.

Does your plant have the tuberous habit? Is it a scrambler?

Your friend did email me back to my surprise, I got this.
At least this gives me a RESTART on my search, I wish I had a better picture!
I haven't looked to see if it has a tuberous root like the Fimbriata...I should!
I also have the Trilobata it likes to grow more like a ground cover and resists climbing but in my search in the last year I have to admit there are several I would love to have. This one seems to be happy mounding, scrambling or climbing. It's not so easy to propagate either...out of 100 or so seeds I got 3 up took 4 months to get those, cuttings don't take so I am working on air layers and that is hit and miss with this one.
Thanks again Shannon

Hello Pat
to me it look like Aristolochia tentaculata that is indeed from Mexico.
However a few species are morphologically close and thus this ID is
tentative. More details would be needed to confirm.
I hope this helps.
Best
Stefan
P.S. your email address ended up in my spam folder.

So I sent him pics of the leaf. I had already sent him that whacked pic of the flower the lady sent me and this was the reply I got....I thanked him tremendously for his generosity of his time and knowledge!!

Hi
this picture look of the leaf looks indeed a bit like A. fimbriata or A. prostrata but the flower you showed is 100% not A. fimbriata but 95% A. tentaculata.
glad it worked out and I was able to help
Best
