Nagami kumquats....

Just purchased some kumquats from Wally-Mart. Brand was Kumquat Growers - Fresh Florida Kumquats out of Dade City, Fla. Looked at their site and the only show 2 types available, Meiwa and Nagami. The Nagami are available now and the Meiwa aren't available till later this month.
Anywho.....picked the viable seeds out of them while I was eating and decided to try to grow them out since they are polyembyonic, I should get at least a couple of sprouts identical to the mother plant which would be awesome! Just need to wait about 3 years and hope the kids don't hurt themselves on the thorns.

I recommend you obtain the Seedless Nagami kumquat. Meiwa is an ok variety, but doesn't bear fruit as often. See the Kumquat listings on this page: Guide to Common Citrus

Thanks Richard! This was actually a spur of the moment experiment to see if I can germinate and keep alive some kind of citrus to possible fruiting in my house/ area. Since most citrus have a minimum of 7-10 years before flower/fruiting and I have read that Kumquats will fruit in the 3-5 year timeframe that this should work well without the massive wait. I also read that most kumquats don't do very well containered on their own roots and most should be grafted on a more suited rootstock.

First of all, citrus are only marginally close-to-type when planted by seed. The odds are against you getting good fruit from the seeds of an exceptional plant.

Second, why wait? Excellent plants are available from reputable sellers at reasonable prices. Here is one example: Complete List of Four Winds Dwarf Citrus Varieties

Right now they have 4-5' trees on sale at the local Home Depots for $9.94. I just bought an Owari Satsuma Mandarin. That's a lot better than starting them from seed.

Re: Nagami kumquats....

I do appreciate the heads up richard, seeing as Four Winds is extremely good at what they do and sell, money is a bit tight around my house at the moment with Xmas and all. Maybe in the springtime when my sidejobs start panning out a bit more, I do want to get some blood oranges. But, this whole thing is mainly just for experimentation. Had everything I needed right there to do it and thought, might as well! Kinda like a person who sprouts the seeds of the avocados they use knowing they have no room or climate for them. Just purely experimental and curiosity.

Rob- good looking out on the Home Depot thing.....too bad the most exotic fruit tree any of the ones in my area carry is dwarf plum trees.
