Hiya My Yard!

I noticed that I dont post nearly as many pictures on this fourm as I take, so I'm making this thread so that way I can show you all the pictures of my yard.

I'll start with what I took pictutes of today. Its not all my plants, or all my yard, but its a start! I'll share some more pics in a few days (probably of the whole yard).

Here is my new planting bed. It took me 2 hours to do this today (in the scorching full sun and 90+ degree heat!)

Heres the area before (only thing there was my Crape Myrtle "Zuni", which is a very late blooming cultivator).
Photobucket

Heres the plan
Photobucket

Heres what it looked like after I dug some grass up
Photobucket

Heres a look of it all completed. The yellow flowers are Portulaca (closed up for the day), the hardy hibiscus is Kopper King, the pinkish flower is a cone flower "Fatal Attraction" and I also have some ice plants, an eastern prickly pear, and a potato vine in there.
Photobucket

Photobucket

Here are some other things in bloom...
My hen and chicks are blooming longer and later this year
Photobucket

This is the first weather station I have gotten that really works accurately.
Photobucket

My Musa Velutina keeps on Flowering!
Photobucket

My red oleander is also flowering well
Photobucket

Caladiums are doing well
Photobucket

One of my plumerias (this one is hidden a bit under the banana leaves. Hopefully the bananas will start growing tall so the plumeria has some room to grow)
Photobucket

My plumeria pudica basically had to re-root itself entirely this spring. Its making a great recovery, but its way behind from last year (it was starting to flower at this time last year!)
Photobucket

I never get tired of seeing the blooms from my mandevillea
Photobucket

This is my passiflora's first year in the ground. It spent last winter in a small pot in my unheated garage. it took a while to come alive again, but it has a ton of buds now and is ready to start taking off!
Photobucket

Double peach hibiscus. The foliage has not been too full this year on this hibiscus.
Photobucket

Some of my plumerias. The tall one has a flower comming up soon!
Photobucket

My spiral ginger keeps making pups and each one is bigger and more robust than the last. This one started comming up only 2 weeks ago and its now about 4 feet tall!
Photobucket

My cardinal vine is starting to flower. I have to keep on fixing it so it doesnt suffocate the plants around it
Photobucket

2 of the bananas on my Musa Velutina
Photobucket

This lantana is growing and flowering like crazy!
Photobucket

My solandra maxima was bare of leaves 2 weeks ago, but it looks nice now! It made a flower indoors last winter, but I missed it (I found the flower dried up on the floor)
Photobucket

My frost proof gardenia is also shade proof! Its in some pretty deep shade which is why it only has one flower, however, one flower is good enough for me because Im just happy that it survived the winter and bloomed
Photobucket

The largest of my 7 plumeria infloresences
Photobucket

Pink mandevillea
Photobucket

My slowest banana, but one of my tallest is my Ice cream banana
Photobucket

My butterfly ginger practically died to the ground this spring after having a hard time adjusting to the sun, but it has made lots of strong pups which now have outgrown the original plant
Photobucket

My elephant ears were slow to sprout, but now that they have started growing, they cant stop!
Photobucket

I hope to see this papaya get large by the end of the summer!
Photobucket

Photobucket

My new mexican petunia
Photobucket

My bougainvillea and weather station
Photobucket

Thanks for looking!

Thanks Greg! Mexican petunias do the best in full sun, but I have mine in part shade and they do well there too! They are pretty tolerant plants of everything (they survive cold winters, drought, heat, sun, shade, and lots of water too!).
Thanks for looking!

I still am in awe that you are growing and overwintering oleanders and others that I would never be able to grow here in my zone 7! Looks great; obviously a lot of hard work. Congratulations

Thanks a lot! I think the most work for these plants is digging up all the tender ones and bringing those and the potted plants indoors. The plants that stay outside usually are the ones with some of the least attention since I dont have to start worrying about them till mid December the earliest!

Thanks for looking!

Randy4ut has a large Queen Palm that he moves in and out each year. In the fall as I'm cursing my decision to have so many plants that must be brought inside, I think of Randy and somehow feel a bit better.

Thanks Sherry! I will definitely post when/ if my mexican petunias go into full bloom. And if I cant get pics of them in full bloom last year, I guess I'll have to dig up some bloom pics of them from last year to show everyone what they should look like!

Howard, I was thnking about Randy's Queen palm too! That is such a tall and beautiful palm, Im aiming for my queen palm to look like that someday! Im sure it must be a big challange to take that inside every year. Probably a job for friends, family, and maybe a crane too!

I just got back from San Diego this morning and I decided to take a few shots of the yard. I missed the heat wave, but the plants sure didnt!

Livistonia

Chamaedorea seifrizii
7.25.11

Agave desmettiana variegata

Some of my Mandevillea vines
7.25.11

A look at the gazeboo with some of my ice cream banana in the pic!
7.25.11

My Staghorn fern gets direct sunglight only from 6am-8am. It seems to really like its spot!
7.25.11

This orchid has flowerd 3 times for me this year (2 times indoors and now its making one outside!)
7.25.11

Still no canna blooms, but some of them are getting pretty big. These are about 5 feet tall and should be getting ready to flower any day now!
7.25.11

Ice Cream banana and Majesty Palm

Scott Pratt Plumeria cutting
7.25.11

I really am a big fan of the classic elephant ears. They are big, cheap, and really do look beautiful!
7.25.11

I had to get this papaya off of ebay since I never have success with papayas from seed that I start indoors (they always burn when they go outside). My windmill palm is in its 3rd summer in the ground. Usually I give it christmas lights, a frost cloth, and christmas lights for protection, but since my other windmill palm did well without the christmas lights, I think this one will also only get a garbage bin over it this winter. The livistonia next to it will get x mas lights like last winter.

7.25.11

7.25.11

My Coconut palm keeps growing well.
7.25.11

Finally some blooms on this mandevilla!
7.25.11

Variegated Sea Hibiscus! I really love these plants and they are fast growers (this was a 3 inch plant when I got it in March)
7.25.11

Oleanders have passed their peak bloom, but they should still keep blooming right up to November
7.25.11

Tillandsia ionantha (I lost a ton of Tilliandsias to the birds who took them to make their nests (especially the spanish moss which I now dont have a single bit of thanks to the birds).
7.25.11

Ball moss (Tillandsia Recurvata) and an orchid in the background
7.25.11

Some peace lilies and my new Dicksonia antarctica!! Its a really nice size! I have it in shade and it will be getting daily waterings for sure!
7.25.11

7.25.11 (new tree fern)

Oleanders, birds of paradise, elephant ears, hydrangea, schefflera, and a few others
7.25.11

There havent been a ton of cicadas this year (compared to last year) but I found this one on my fig tree this morning!
7.25.11

I cleared out the spaghetti squash I planted here because all the flowers were male (which means no fruit) and they were taking way too much space). Now I have some wandering jew vines and the mandevilleas.
7.25.11

Plumeria Divine

7.25.11

7.25.11

[7.25.11

7.25.11

I have come to the conclusion that grasshoppers will eat absolutely any plant. I mean I cant imagine any bug that would eat entire leaves off of a plumeria, but thats what a grasshopper did to this plumeria. I just hope it leaves this infloresence alone! I have been waiting for 2 summers for this plumeria to bloom and its only a month away from doing that, but it only takes an hour for a bug to munch it off). Anyways, heres a pic of the inflo
7.25.11

Variegated plumeria
7.25.11

Cutting of my plumeria divine
7.25.11

I really dont do anything for this fern, it takes care of itself!
7.25.11

Windmill palm that survived the winter with just a garbage bin over it during snow/rain/extreme cold events. The first frond of the year was a little discolored, but the second one was normal.
7.25.11

My newly planted butia and a frostproof gardenia
7.25.11

My brugmansia
7.25.11

Spiral ginger, european fan palm, and oleander
7.25.11

At least Im getting squash from one of my squashes!
7.25.11

My sabal minor has finished flowering.
7.25.11

My favorite lantana!
7.25.11

My Silver Saw Palmetto (still has yet to go through a winter)
7.25.11

Kopper King Hibiscus
7.25.11

7.25.11

Looks like 2 bananas from my Musa velutina
7.25.11

Plumeria, basjoo, and spiral ginger (and solandra maxima, oleander, and brugmansia)
7.25.11

7.25.11

It was suppose to be cloudy and rainy today, but we ended up getting a bit of sun (and a lot of humidity to match) so I decided to take a few pics around the yard..

Usually my airplants flower in the Fall, but they decided to bloom early this year.
Photobucket

Ball moss
Photobucket

My tallest and oldest plumeria is making its second bloom ever! The plant is about 7 feet tall, but it leans a bit so its actually a little taller. The flowers are small (compared to other plumerias) and a nice red color. I cant wait for the blooms!
8.7.11
8.7.11

My Plumeria "Pretty Princess" is now becoming a reliable bloomwer! The only problem is that its a late bloomer. Usually if the inflos are very young when they are taken inside, they will bloom well inside, but if the inflos developed outside, they will drop almost as soon as they go inside for the winter.
8.7.11

Plumeria divine
8.7.11

There are inflos on almost every branch of my Plumeria "Divine". Im hoping for a warm September, but usually Divine has no problem blooming well into October.
8.7.11

Painted Lady Hibiscus
8.7.11

Lantanas planted underneath my coconut palm
8.7.11

This desert rose had a really hard time earlier this summer, but after some dieback and leaf drop, it did grow back and now it has at least 20 buds! Heres one of its first blooms! I think this desert rose is called "Rasberry Ice"
8.7.11

The answer to quick papaya growth is plant food. I gave my papaya plant food in late july and it grew 6 inches taller in one week!!
8.7.11
8.7.11

Livistonia in its second summer in the ground and 4th summer in my yard. (Trunk of my Thai Black Banana is to the left and some purple hearts are below it)
8.7.11

Some lantana I planted in the ground
8.7.11

Finally some canna blooms!
8.7.11
8.7.11

This is one of my healthier cannas. I cant wait for this one to bloom! I have no idea of the banana, but they were described as a "Coral" color when I bought them.
8.7.11

Ice cream banana
8.7.11

8.7.11

Windmill palm in its third summer. Its really growing fast this year. I also like how this one has very white undersides unlike my others.
8.7.11

Orchids love being outside!
8.7.11

One of my favorite combo of plants in my yard.
8.7.11

Dicksonia Antarctica and some peace lilies
8.7.11

My windmill palm in its second summer and my camellia "Kramers Supreme". Kramers Supreme is a pretty tender camellia so I will be giving it protection
8.7.11

My Saba and Spiral ginger
8.7.11

Potted Elephant ears
8.7.11

Pool view
8.7.11

Some plumerias
8.7.11

Anyone else with Crape Myrtle "Zuni" notice its a late bloomer? Mine is just making its first blooms of the year now! All the other crapes in my neighborhood have been blooming for weeks now!
8.7.11

Cone flower
8.7.11

Umbrella palm
8.7.11

Sabal minor seeds
8.7.11

We got about an inch or 2 of rain in just a few hours a few days ago so there was a river coming out of my backyard!
Photobucket

My Zuni Crape Myrtle finally started blooming! All of the other crapes around town have been blooming since July and I havent seen any bloom as late as mine! Im surprised that I havent noticed all the crapes in my neighborhood because I counted at least 20 as street trees just on one road!

Newly planted sunflowers! These are my first sunflowers ever, and I must say, they are great plants!

Spiral Ginger growing a new pup

This pansy survived the winter outdoors and now survived the summer outdoors as well! Usually they dont make it because of the hot weather, but they seem to hang on if given summer shade.

Peace lilies
8/13/11

Mexican Petunia
8/13/11

My first plumeria is blooming for the second time. Im so happy! The only bad thing is that its so tall that I had to get on a chair just to take this picture! The flower is about 7-8 feet above the ground

Anyone with papaya plants know if these are buds coming up? Im not sure, but it does look like it might be some buds!
8/13/11

Cardinal vine has grown up a badly pruned bush and is flowering very nicely from 11 feet above!

This cardinal vine bloom was a bit closer to eye level

No idea what the name of this canna is, but its a nice one!

The banana and canna are in competition and apparently the banana is winning
8/13/11

Finally, a desert rose that has flowered for me! The blooms dont last as long as I would like, but I do love the way they look and there are lots of buds coming up!

8/13/11

I cant wait for this orchid to bloom!
8/13/11

I never have managed to keep floral azaleas alive indoors until this winter. Apparently they become carefree once they are outside for the summer and now its blooming!
8/13/11

My plumeria Divine cutting is going to be the next plumeria to put a show of blooms

Default Re: My Yard!

Usually my yard is at its fullest and greatest in Late September to mid October, but with Hurricane Irene, I have a good feeling that most of my plants will be damaged so this is the best my yard might look this summer.

I saw a hummingbird last night and I had my camera in hand for once so I was able to get a few blurry images of the hummingbird getting some food from my cardinal vine's flowers.
