KMag application?
 

Hello Gang,

I have a Hibiscus. It was recommened that I use potassium on it to get it to bloom. I have some sample bottles of KMag. My question is, how much should I apply? These plants are in 10-gallon containers and all the application rates for KMag that I have seen are for acreage.

Richard should be able to guide you. I use about a 1/4 cup in spring for my potted bananas. That may be heavy for a hibiscus. I would suggest trying a Tablespoon per pot to begin. I don't know much about hisbicuses.

That was last year. I had just sprinkled a little bit around each one and they flowered very well. I left them out during the winter and they died.

One approach is to water with a premixed solution. The rule of thumb that I use is patterned after UCR's fertigation where each macronutrient do not exceed 300 ppm in the water. Just for the K (18%), you can mix about 1.2 teaspoon KMag to a gallon of water. Or dissolve 6.3 grams per gallon of water. This is the concentration that will not burn the roots of your plants every time you water. So you can water as much as your plant would need without worrying about over application. The excess will drain out, but water only just enough to minimize waste of nutrients. You can also mix proportionate amount of N, so that you achieve a 3-1-5 ratio.
