I reserved a Jujube. Going to pick it up next week. I can't wait!!! A bit expensive but supposed to be a nice size. I think I'm going to test it's rusticity and push th limits a bit... I'll post pics when I get it.

I've been wanting to plant a jujube but so many here have warned me because they tend to be extremely invasive. A co-worker from Viet Nam has a huge 7 year old tree he planted from cuttings he brought back with him so I might just start some from him since the tree is so robust, even in our heat. I'm thinking I could plant it in the chicken's run and they can keep any suckers pruned off.

I got one last fall and was surprised to see it flowering in October. When I inquired at the local garden center, I was told they normally do flower at that time of year and then produce fruit in the winter (like loquat), but the fruit doesn't usually hold through the winter months so the likelihood of getting fruit was very slim. Then to my surprise, it flowered again a couple of months ago and is now holding dozens of grape-sized fruits......can hardly wait!

Maybe we can exchange cuttings one day... For grafting. Is yours big? Mine is supposed to be a very large one.

Mine is Li Black Sea Jujube (zizyphus jujube) and I have just the one tree which has produced fruit for the last couple of years - and I know there are no other trees around.
Therefore I think its safe to say Li are self-fertile. "Most jujube cultivars produce fruit without cross-pollination, but seeds from such self-pollination are usually not viable (such as from the Li or Lang cultivars)" But you may get more fruit with 2 trees? |
