Cory, its great fun and easy to sprout avocado's but they'l take a long time to flower and will need another for a polinator as well. If you can get one there's a variety " Don Gillogly" that will bear fruit easily in a pot and will do fine pruned to keep in the house over winter.

Durling's Nursery -- a well known wholesale grower of Citrus and Avocado, has done extensive tests and trials with Don Gillogly. They found there is no merit to the claims of the patent holder. Further, the phenotype of the plant matches Zutano, so the original plant was apparently raised from a seed of a grocery store avocado. If you want a smaller size Avocado tree, I recommend Holiday. For more information on Avocados, please see Planting An Avocado Or Two. If the occasional mathematical formulas are bothersome you can safely skip them and read the conclusion. The paper was written for the horticultural program at Cuyamaca College. |
Re: How to plant avacado seeds??
A good read Richard, thanks for the link. i'll be looking in to getting a "Holiday" since I've wanted a dwarf plant for a while.

Re: How to plant avacado seeds??
Thanks for the link Richard & thanks for the info Bob! :) K. I checked out Don Gillogly and found this.
Wayside Gardens Persea 'Don Gillogly' PP#11,057 - Avocado 'Don Gillogly'- Great for Indoor Containers I could get 2 for less than 100 so I might try it just to see. But I'm really interested in the Gem, Gwen, Holiday, & Sharwil. It says they're dwarfs (10-15') that ripen in summer, summer, fall, & spring (same order). And they're A, A, A, and B. The only question is which "A". Btw, sex-change!? Does a single flower just suddenly turn into the other sex? I dont understand that but I will def get an "A" and a "B" for the mound. I took 6 pages of notes so far and made a diagram that shows how to set everything up (and the percolator test). I'll prolly get Gem & Sharwil unless Holiday & Sharwil would work better. And I'll def use GroPower 8-6-8 (sprinkled on the soaker hose). There is one more question. Will the dwarfs survive a zone 7 winter or will they need protection? Btw, I'm still gonna do the seed. I'll check out grafting later and decide what to do with that part. |
Re: How to plant avacado seeds??
Most avocados are only hardy to zone 9b, but the mexicola cultivars including Sir Prize will survive in a mild zone 9a. All Avocados are dead in zone 7.
Again, the Don Gillogly cultivar are for people who want to believe the claims are true. |

Re: How to plant avacado seeds??
Thanks for sharing the photo, Tony. Awesome tennis ball! :D Jk. That's one big avocado. It's a little bigger than the ones we got at the store! Omg! I think I spelled avocado right this time.
Thanks Richard! This will be one bomb thread for anyone in zone 9 that likes avocados. :) And yeah, i thought about it and if i went to college in zone 9, I could start a indoor avocado and take it with me [especially since they grow so slow]. I've def decided just to do seeds right now. |

Re: How to plant avacado seeds??
Yours look great, Tony! :D I can't wait to see how mine look when they sprout. I finally set some up today. Here's a photo I took:
The cups were too tall so I did have to put them in smaller containers. But the containers are transparent so I'll still be able to watch as they develop! |
