Re: A Hibiscus A Day....
Jeffrey - the fancy tropical hybrids are often triploid and thus sterile (just like bananas). Which is why I said that you'd need to be looking for honest-to-susan species H. rosa-sinensis to be sure of getting seed set.

Re: A Hibiscus A Day....
I'm not very familiar with tropical hibiscus but saw one the other day that had gone through 24F recently with no signs of damage. I was surprised and am wondering how common or uncommon that might be.

Re: A Hibiscus A Day....
Harvey,
I have a trop. orange hib & a variegated 'Red Wave' that still look great after being outside for many(at least 10 days worth) of at freezing days. The Trop Hib's I have in the ground are trimmed & covered...they LOOKED froze after one at freezing day. I do not know the common or uncommoness of it though - just wanted to offer up my recent experience. ~Cheryl

Re: A Hibiscus A Day....
I don't know for sure it's a tropical hibiscus, but the owner did tell me it was a hibiscus. Like I said, I don't know much about these so I'm asking.

Re: A Hibiscus A Day....
Could it be a Rose-of-Sharon, Hibiscus syriacus,? This is a temperate shrub.

Re: A Hibiscus A Day....
Thanks, Howard, but I don't think it's that since I recognize that (saw one in his greenhouse, actually). The leaves are different. I don't remember seeing any flower buds.

Re: A Hibiscus A Day....
Okay, I learned it is Lagunaria patersonii, or Norfolk Island Hibiscus.
I read it can be an itchy experience! |

Re: A Hibiscus A Day....
This is my Snow Queen - I really thought this gorgeous variegated bush was a goner. I am soooooo excited that it has new growth and leaves are coming back out. On the tip of every "new growth" end is a bud. It is going to be FULL of blooms soon! Woo Hoo!
